Do i need wads.

I am pretty new to black powder firearms and with my old muzzleloading rifle i would always load it with a ball and a wad. I recently purchased a muzzleloading revolver that came with a kit that had everything except the caps and the powder. It came with the round balls for ammo,But there are no wads. instead of wads they give you a bottle of this muzzleloader lube to smere on the end of the cylinder after you loaded it. My question is, Is this alright to do or do i need to use wads.

I have one of these blackpowder replica revolvers as well. Just smear the bore butter flush with the front of the cylinder and you are good to go. Pyrodex P hasbeen a pretty good propellant for this application.

If your ever placing an order or somewhere they have them, pick up a pack of wads. It makes loading nice. In the mean time be sure and smear that lube over the end of the cylinder so it stops any chance of a chain fire. You get one of them and you will never forget it...:D I've had a double go off and that was bad enough.

You don't have to use the lube over the bullet and a wad too, or if you use a wad, such as a Wonder Wad of the appropriate diameter, you can omit the grease on top of the ball.

The purpose of either is to lube the round, or course, but mainly to prevent flashover or chain-firing where more than one chamber goes off simulataneously!

Personally, I prefer to put a Wonder Wad under the ball. It is a lot faster and much cleaner/neater than fooling around trying to squirt a gob of grease into each chamber afterseating the ball. If you put a wad into each chamber mouth after the powder charge, it will prevent any powder spillage from happening before the balls are seated.

What I found works as well is Criscovegetable greaseon the end of the chambers it is not as messy and does not foul the powder either.

Crisco is essentially "Bore Butter" without the added odor and yellow food coloring....
