Muzzleloaders Scopes

Hopefully by late muzzleloader season here in Iowa, I will have my new muzzleloaders. Planning on getting an Omega with black synthetic stock and stainless steel barrel. Now, my question. Does it matter what kind of scope I put on it? Like, will a rifle scope be fine? I got one muzzleloader now with a scope on it, but I can't remember if it's a rifle scope or what.

A rifle scope will be fine. Just be sure you have enough eye relief so you are not eating the scope too often. Sounds like you have a great rifle coming.

Almost any Leupold scope should be fine. There are some scopes out there that are designated for shotguns and muzzleloaders. These normally have thicker reticles and more eye relief - which, as Cayugad recommends, is a good thing. Burris and Nikon are both pretty durable scopes - as is the Bushnell Trophy. I wouldn't choose one of the "economy" scopes - might not be able to stand up to the recoil and hold zero. The Leupold Rifleman or VX1 can be had for less than $200. That would be my first choice.

A lot of folks recommend scopes in the 1.5X6 or 2X7 power range. I don't see anything wrong with a 3X9 either, but doubt if anything more powerful is useful for hunting.

Also - don't try to save a buck on rings and mounts. Hard kicking gunsneedgoodscope attachment hardware.

Start with the base and rings.

I have this setup on my Omegaand many other riflesand it's excellent and the best base and rings I've ever used. You can remove the scope for cleaning or working on the Omega and then put it right back on and have it remain on zero.

Leupold Quick Release (QR) Base and Rings.

Height (in) MatteQR Medium 0.7749974QR High 0.90 49979QR Ext Medium 0.77 49976QR Ext High 0.90 49981QR Base - T/C Encore Omega(1 piece) Matte: # 52325

Go with the medium or high QR rings. The low rings will leave very little room to access the hammer. You may want the QR Extension rings to allow for a little more scope positioning. Will depend on which scope you select. I did not need the extension rings on my Omega with the scope I went with.

Optics-wise, get the best you can afford and you will not be dissapointed.

Leupold Optics areexcellent and I have many.

I've got the VXIII 2.5x8x36 on my Omega with the High QR rings. It's an exceptional scope.

Shotgun or rifle scope, either will work fine. I agree, try to get something with generous eye relief. Like 3.5-4" or better.

I had a cheap bushnell banner on mine for a while and it worked fine to be honest. Really depends on what you intend to use it for. Like conditions and the ranges you want to use it at.

i see leupold makes a specific shotgun- muzzleoader scope for 199$ i believe its 2x7x33. the thing you have to understand is most rifle scopes are paralaxed for 150 yards where a shotgun- muzzleoader is usually 75 yards so there is a difference. on the cheap look into the bushnell banner. i like the fixed 4 power. thats around 69$
