RE: Great Barrel Deal
I find the best place for the peep is about 1/2" back from the front tang screw.,so 2 new holes will have to be drilled and tap.
I found that if you use the rear screw and drill one hole for the front of the sight ,you have to dig your check into the stock to pickup the peep sight set up.
I find shooting a peep make a world of difference compared to open sights

Setting the rear sight higher also requires a taller front sight, I believe. I was going to use the standard mounting holes but use a shim under the rear sight. My Trade Rifle has both rear mounting holes drilled and tapped. I think they do that with the later rifles. This kind of thing makes me wonder if the designers ever try what they design. Someone at Lyman should be aware that the sight as designed does not work very well.

RE: Great Barrel Deal
The set-up I was talking about was my t/c flinters hawkens and the New Englander which is a cap lock.
I was at one time going to buy the trade rifle but instead I did purchase the GPR .I can say the Trade rifle would have been a better choice,I found the GPR a little to heavy for stalking deer or walking in the woods.I did sell the m/l
I now have the t/c hawkens in 50 cal. flinter with the hunter peep on the tang.I also have the 54 New Englander also with the peep.I keep the renegade 54 cal. flinter with stock sights only because the late flinter season does not allow peep sights, but could never understand why they allow fiber optic @ not a peep set-up.

RE: Great Barrel Deal
Does anyone know whether these barrels will fit the Lyman Trade Rifle or the Lyman Deerstalker? I've heard some of the import guns duplicated the T/C Hawken dimensions and can use T/C barrels, but don't know which ones.
Mentioned this deal over at Muzzleloadingforum.com a week agoand no one was even slightly interested. Not surprising with that group. They're too busy right now debating P.C. and what 'Traditional' means. That site's gotten alot less interesting since the Inline guys left.

Green Mountain does sell a barrel that will fit the Lyman Trade Rifle. I am not sure if this is one of them. You could give them a call. The folks there are real nice and helpful... I was thinking of getting a 1:70 barrel for my Trade Rifle Flintlock from them, but I promised.. no more muzzleloading stuff... for a while..

My .50 caliber Stainless Steel 1-28 twist Green Mountain Barrels came in today. I cleaned one of them and will do the other later tonight. I did notice that the bore felt a little ruff when I ran a patch down them. So I will clean them one more time and then if the weather permits will shoot one of them tomorrow.
If the barrel turns out ruff, I will J-B Bore Paste it. If I can get one shooting fast enough, we have our early doe season in one week. Maybe I will give it a chance tospeak. Although there are a lot of other rifles that have been wanting to talk too...
The finish on the barrel is excellent and the fit to the stock could not be better, so perhaps this will be a good shooter. Time will tell..

RE: Great Barrel Deal
I sat looking at the rain and at that new rifle barrel sitting there and decided I would not melt. So I grabbed up my gear and went outside to the range in the rain. I was overall impressed with the way the rifle loaded the Hornady XTP. Not a tight fit at all. I shot a couple of them. The first shot out of the rifle, I could tell I had forgot how sensative the hair trigger on my Renegade was. I shot a little low.
Holding a true 6 o'clock hold it hit right where it was pointing at. So on the next couple I held a heavy modified hold and it slipped them in pretty good.
Since the bore felt a little ruff when I first cleaned the packing grease out of it, I decided to shoot some conicals. So I grabbed a box of the 460 grain No Excuse conical and a couple different kinds of powders and went at it. The rifle shoots pretty good actually considering the weather conditions.
80 Grains of Goex 3f or 80 grains of Pyrodex P and the rifle did a pretty good job with the iron sights at 50 yards off the bench...I have a lot more things to try out of this.
When I cleaned it the second time, I felt no ruff spots anymore in the bore. And the rifle cleaned up beautiful....
