RE: Problems seating bullet last inch

ORIGINAL: farm hunter

Hi - I wonder if this is a common problem?

My cousin bought a new break-open CVA - and after the shot - we noticed that the next time we seated a powerbelt - it stopped short - almost a full inch. We could not budge the bullet further down - and ended up opening it up and pushing the bullet back out. We cleaned the bore out (from the breech) and this time it seated OK. But again on the next shot - same problem. It seems unreasonable to have to clean the barrel after every shot - we were kind of hoping that after a few shots - it would be easier - but not so.

I'm no expert on Blackpowder - but I've had a Thompson for 4 years - and I don't have these problems - I use a Saboted .44 however - not powerbelts. Has anyone else had similar intances? Is it the barrel? or possibly a Powerbelt issue? Maybe its fairly normal - I just didn't think it should be.

Thanks FH
If is is a Power Belt issue, it is only in conjunction with your particular rifle (and perhaps powder). I have used them for years in a number of rifles of different calibers, and they have always been easier to load in a fouled bore than almost any other possible bullet design. The only issue I've had with them, and this has only been since CVA started marketing them, is that sometimes the plastic wad doesn't come off, and this destroys accuracy. I've stopped using them for hunting purposes for this reason, and have gone back to Maxi-balls. Maxi's are very accurate, but harder to start in the bore when loading. Another excellent bullet is the Lee R.E.A.L., but of course you have to cast your own!

RE: Problems seating bullet last inch

I had the exact problem with my CVA Kodiak Magnum. After each shot I put the brass cleaning jig on my range rod and run it down the barrel. I usually can feel the crude ring. I bust up the crude ring with the brass cleaning jig then run two wet and two dry patches down the barrel. Pain in the &^% to do, but the accuracy is great and never had a problem with seating again. I have loaded a second load without cleaning just to test and the accuracy did not suffer to much. I figure I can get a second shot in the field and be accurate without cleaning if need be.
I also wanted to experiment with different powders to see the results. However, in my first attempt APP sticks I only could get the gun to go off 3 out of 5 shots and the accuracy was horrible. I would rather clean the777 then wonderif the gun was going to go off. I have heard the powder form is usually cleaner then the sticks, but I like the conveinence of pellets.
