Mounts & Rings for Black Diamond XR

Need some mounts and rings for myBlack Diamond XR. I think it was gaHunter19 that suggested the Leupold Quick Release Bases and Rings. I have an older Tasco 40mm scope that I would like to put on my ML. I have seen some of the quick release rings on eBay but not sure if they will fit this gun. What do I need to look for on the mounts to make sure it they will work?

Depending on the kind of base you put on the rifle, that will determine the kind of rings along with the tube dimension of the scope. For instance I put weaver bases on the rifles, then rings that accept the weaver style base are needed. Then you just need to make sure of the tube. I usually go with a 1" tube. So you need to determine the size of the tube that is on the scope. Seeing it is an old Tasco like the World Class, Euro Class or Pronghorn I believe were all 1" tubes, but still check.

On my Black Diamond XR I think I went with a simple set of B-Square mounts and rings in the weaver style.

Correction - I put Wood's Trophy mounts and rings that I purchased from Cabela's on the Black Diamond. They are still on the rifle and have not moved since the day I installed them other then that timeI thought I wanted to put some Burris Quick Release Rings on it...

Thanks Cayugad,Was there a reason you didn't use the quick release mounts....Problems, issues, don't work as described??? Just seems like they might come inhandy while cleaning the gun to keep from accidently bumping the scope.

Without a doubt they would come in handy. Especially with the Black Diamond rifle the quick release would be a nice feature. The reason I sent them back was I mounted them on the scope and shot four different times, taking the rings off and then replacing them to check their zero ability. And each time they did not return to the same POI. Granted they were not all that much off. Once only a half an inch. But if I have to shoot my rifle to check it to make sure the rings are true, then I see little reason to have them on the rifle. I was always going to geta set of Leupold Quick Release or Weaver but never did. I put the scope back on the Diamond and it will sit there until it decides it does not want to work anymore.

I would try a set of the quick release, but they would be top quality with matching bases. I think that might be where mine went bad because I was trying to mount a Burris Quick release on a set of trophy bases. I always suspect that had I matching bases, this might have been a whole different experience.

Thats the reason I asked. I was discussing these with a co-worker and he said he had never tried them but had heard they had trouble returning back to zero as advertised.

If anyone has used these and had good orbad experiences I would liek to hear. Thanks

Also, Guys I live in south Arkansas. All the motels and hotels are here and in surrounding towns are full with displaced familys from Katrina. My sister (who has a huge house) has taken in two familys to shelter for a few weeks. Lets all keep these and all the familys suffering in our thoughts and prayers. They really need it. Bad situation that doesn't appear to be getting any better any time soon.

How are yougetting a good cleaning done on the Black Diamond without removing the scope? Just putting the action, scope and all, in the hot water?

I think if a person was able to take the scope off the Black Diamond it would make the rifle much easier to clean, but you can still clean, care for, and maintain the Black Diamond with a scope on the rifle. Granted if you can not remove the scope you might not be inclined to give the rifle a water bath, but then I do not give any of my inline rifles a water bath. I found a much easier way to clean them with simple patches and solution.

I had results similar to Cayugad. The mounts I have are supposed to return to zero after removing and replacing the scope, but I've never experienced true 'return to zero' performance. As Cayugad said...if I have to reset things on the range, it's not worth taking it off in the first place.

That said, I do remove the scope once a year, and that's at the end of hunting season, so I can scrub everything down, rails included. Once I'm back at the range in the summer, I sight it in again, and it stays until Dec.

It's not hard to get a good cleaning without the whole hot water bath. As Cayugad stated, with a good process and good materials, it's pretty easy to be thorough.

Thanks tobpark, since no oneseems to have had reallygreat success with these I may just stick with convention mounts. I certainly don't have the time to keep running back to range to check my gun after every cleaning. And sure don't want to doubt my gun when it comes time to squeeze the trigger on that buck of a life time that just will not seem to come by me :-) Thanks for the input

It sounds like others have had different results, and I must admit that I was skeptical when I first tried them last year. However, I have used these mounts and love them for my XR. When i first got them I tested by shooting and removing the scope 5 times. The greatest varience at 100 yards w/a 4x scope was 1/2 an inch.

BTW...I took 4 deer with this setup last year and never had a problem.
