Ideal scope eye relief?
I am just getting into M/L and am trying to research everything before I purchase.
Is there an ideal eye relief... or maybe I should say minimum eye relief necessary for a scope on a muzzle loader? I am probably going with the TC Omega rifle. I am seeing long eye relief specs of 4" up to 6" on the scopes I'm looking at. Is 4" enough? Sorry if my questions may be dumb ones at this point, but I am trying to learn! Thanks in advance for any help. |
RE: Ideal scope eye relief?
It depends on your gun and load. 3" on a light recoiling rifle is perfectly fine. Obviously heavier recoiling rifles need more eye relief. For exampleI've got one 3" eye relief scope that works perfect on the rifle it's on becuase the load used isn't a heavy kicker, but have to have more eye relief on my other rifle because that one kicks more with it's prefered load.

RE: Ideal scope eye relief?
4" eye relief should be fine on an ML. It's all I've ever had. I've been knocked a couple of times though, but mostly when in a hurry. I've since added little rubber boots on the eyepiece of my scopes so that I won't get cut -again. I agree with Cayugad that if the relief is too much, then I end up fishing for the occular window.
If possible, have a demo 6" eye relief scope loose mounted on your rifle at a shopso you can see if it will work for you. |
RE: Ideal scope eye relief?
Alot of shotgun scopes have slightly longer eye relief , and the power range that works great on a muzzel loader . I had a 4x simmons shotgun scope on my knight and it was great , weny with a 2x7 on my omega and it works good allso .
