50 cal Muzzle brake?
 

I was just wondering if anyone had experience w/ installingports andor muzzle brakes on M.L. I think that a hunting load for my 50cal might be a little to much for my son. He shot a hot load in my 45cal w/ 195gr powerbelts and was able to hit a milk jug at 100 yds, but...it was all he wanted, maybe a little more. I was wondering if porting or a brake could tame a 50 somewhatlike acenterfire rifle or if its a cat of a different color.

I don't know nothing about the muzzle brakes.. perhaps one of the better absorbing shock recoil pads might be the answer. Also you can load the rifle down for the younger shooter. You do not have to push a projectile as hard as possible to still keep its effectiveness...

I have a muzzle brake on one of mine , it drops the recoil a little , but the increase in noise is deafening . A muzzle brake will help a little , but scaling the load to both the shooter and the quarry as Cayugad suggested will help more . Scale back the load and add a Sims recoil pad .

Muzzle brakes work best with lighter bullets at higher pressures. A .257 Weatherby has almost no recoil with a muzzle brake. A muzzleloader, however,with low pressure and heavy bullets, would likely benefit the least from one of these devices. I wouldn't waste my money - get a Benchmaster or Caldwell Lead Sled to use for bench shooting. Your son probablywon't ever feel the recoil in the field while hunting.

My buddy Magna-Ported his Encore 50 cal. He said it really helped with muzzle lift.

Thanks for the input guys, I never thought about the low velocity not generateing the needed oposite gases to brake the recoil. Once it was mentioned it was pretty obvious.
