RE: Whats your deer load ??
I use this same load for deer - when hunting in the rifle season or in New Mexico. The 250 Shockwave has plenty of penetration for deer. During the regular Colorado MZ deer season, however, I use a 348 gr Powerbelt ahead of 100 grains or T7 ffg.

RE: Whats your deer load ??
Just started to use a muzzleloader this year and have only shot it once so far, but here is what I'm using at the moment...
Knight Revolution .50 cal Leupold VX I 3-9 x 40 Triple 7 loose powder (100 grains) Barnes Expander 250 grains Big Country, Noticed you are using 130 grains of Triple 7 with your Barnes Expander. From what I understand max load for a Knight is 150 grains. Q - Does 130 grains of Triple 7 equate to 150 grains of normalpowderload? I've heard there was a difference in Triple 7 and was looking todetermine the balance. Q - What is your effective range with that load? Thanks for your guidance in advance... Piney |

RE: Whats your deer load ??
Man, I don't load mine up near as hot as the rest of you. Maybe that is why I got skunked last year!! I think it was more I could hardly breathe I was so nervous in my stand when my one and only buck went by about 20 yards out. It was such a rush, can't imagine what it will be like if I actually get one this year!! I shoot 95 grains of ffg pyrodex and it is pushing a 245 grain powerbelt. I have a 50 cal. CVA opitima. I get a nice tight pattern with them at the range, but this year I have been practicing standing up with no support. So hopefully there will be no misses this year!!

RE: Whats your deer load ??
MD Piney, I practice at 200 yards alot. But still alot of drop. According to knight 150gr of 777 is perfectly safe with thier breech plug from the .52 cal. I bought that breech plug and it works great. I only get little over 2000fps with this load. Thought I would get more.
Accuracy was really better with 120gr of 777 but very acceptable with 130gr. I hunt blackwater swamp and really wanted the range. I still won't take shots over 120yard or so. But one day if its just perfect, who knows. Last year, I shot one doe with 3 50gr 777 pellets which is the same as 3 50gr pyrodex pellets. Accuracy was good, but not as good as loose. If I got better accuracy with a lower load like 95 I would use it but I didn't. |
