elk bullets
i need some recommendations for bullets for knight disc extreme .50 cal. we will be hunting elk this fall in southwest colorado. we cannot use sabots and must use loose powder. recoil is not a problem so i can use up to 150 grains of powder if my gun likes it, also must use iron sights, peep sights are legal.

RE: elk bullets
Just because of the restrictions on the hunting situation I would suggest some http://members.aol.com/noexcusesb/page2.html No Excuses Conicals in the 460 grain range. I shoot them with about 85 grains of powder and the accuracy is exceptional and the knock down will be all you would need. Try them both with and without a wonderwad.
Another thing you might look into is powerbelts. 348 AT or bigger would be where I look. See how they shoot out of the rifle. You could also look at some of the T/C Maxi ball or Great Plains conicals. I note but have never shot some of the Colorado Conicals sold by Cabela's. Perhaps someone else has.. |
RE: elk bullets
Tda We just sighted in 5 guns for a colorado elk hunt last week. Three Encore's & two Renagade's. The faster twist Encore's loved 100-120 grains of T-7 or pyr. select with the 348 Aero tip powerbelts. They shot VERY GOOD. :) The Renegade's shot vey good also with 90-100 grains of T-7 or pyr. select & 370 TC maxi-ball with or without the wonder wad. Good luck with the hunt.

RE: elk bullets
tda - in addition to what was recommended by cayugad and smithbros; you also might try a 410 gr. Hornady Great Plains lead bullet with a MMC ballistic bridge sub-base behind it. These are available in Cabela's. This has good knock down for elk and can be loaded pretty stiff if you don't mind recoil. Without the sub base, it doesn't shoot well at the higher end of the powder charge scale.
The most popular elk load out here is the 348 gr. Powerbelt ahead of 100 gr. of Triple 7, FWIW. Roskoe. |
RE: elk bullets
Lets see, I have a 370 Grain T/C Maxi-Ball loaded on top of 80 grains of Goex 2F in my CVA Bobcat. Come on September!!!!!!!

RE: elk bullets
I've taken 3 elk in CO using a TC Black Diamond, 348 gr PowerBelts HPs, and 90grs of Clear Shot. Two were broadside and one was quartering toward me. Longest shot was about 50 yards, and the nearest was 8 steps. Each bullet exited and all elk were recoved within 40 yards. Gonna use the same gun and load this Sep. I settled on 90 grs because accuracy suffered as I went to 100, 110, etc.Good Luck on your hunt!
