Just my personal belief, but for an all around gun I would do the 50 - a lot more versitility with that caliber.

Check your local options a lot of states will not allow 45 for big game hunting.

I agree with sabotloader. There is nothing the .45 caliber can do that the .50 caliber can not match. There are a wider selection of projectiles for the .50 caliber and besides, it puts a bigger hole through the target. When shooting a .50 caliber sabot you have dropped your bullet diameter in many cases to a .44 or .45 caliber bullet. With a .45 caliber you have dropped even further to a .40 and .38 caliber bullet. Why go for a smaller hole? The difference in trajectory will mean nothing once you learn your load. Also a lot of people tell me they shoot long distances, but what do you really think the longest shot is you would normally take. A .50 caliber with practice is good out to 200 yards and has better knock down when it gets there. Also should you ever want to hunt is certain states, the .45 caliber is not allowed...

One last point that I can not say is true or false, but we used to read a lot of posts of people having a hard time finding a good shooting load for the .45 caliber. I am sure with the new projectiles and rifle designs, this is all changed now... Just a thought.

well it depends on your game you will be hunting, personally i own 2 .45 caliber bp rifles and iam very satisfied. the only problem is when u shot a 45 in sabot its typically a .40 or .357 c aliber bullet due to the plastic jacket they sit in. but a powerbelt bullet has a plastic jacket on its back side which allows it to be 1 thousandth of a inch larger than the the sabots. which makes for a better sealed chamber and better shot to shot consistency and preasure. The powerbelt bullets give you a larger bullet than the plastic jackets. add that with a 100 grn powerdex load and 209 primer and buddy you cant go wrong. plenty of knockdown for whitetail and blackbear. glad i can be of help.
