Velocity increase - Pyrodex vs. Goex?
Just read that Pyrodex has a velocity edge over Goex powder. How much of an edge is this? Reason I am asking is I have a load worked up for elk, and am using Goex 2f. Should it be worth my time to see how my gun does with Pyrodex and the same bullet, or keep everything the way I have it? Thanks.

RE: Velocity increase - Pyrodex vs. Goex?
My understanding is the increase is very little. If I had a good load worked up, then I would work with that. Goex has been a great powder for many years. It would not hurt to try it, but to be honest I have had more ignition problems with Pyrodex then I ever had with Goex.

RE: Velocity increase - Pyrodex vs. Goex?
It all depends on grain size when comparing. In most cases, the increase won't result in more than one-half inch difference on your paper targets.
If you want to see a more substantial difference, try 777 FFF and Black Mag-3. The most important part of comparing two powders that are somewhat close in velocity/energy is paying attention to which one provides the best accuracy. Accuracy is more important to me than the differences between Pyrodex and Goex in cleanup. |
