RE: MOOSE MILK?

It's a liquid patch lubricant which is usually based on water soluble cutting oil. One exception to that, whichI knowof,is a recipe from a gentleman that goes by the handle of Stumpkiller. His moosemilk mixtureis based on castor oil and is an exceptional patch lube, IMO.

I find using any form of moosemilk with sabot/bullets increases bullet-loading difficultya-l-o-t. The plastic grabs on to the burnt, sticky bore walls& won't let go...lol. That includes Napa cutting oil, castor oil, Ballistol... etc.

Moose milk formula (Stumpkiller's)

3 oz Castor Oil
8 oz 91% Isopropyl Alcohol
4 oz Witch Hazel
1 oz Murphy's Oil Soap
16 oz water

Mix the ingredents in the order listed. Castor oil is not water soluable and will not mix with water. It will how ever desolve in the alcohol. Shake the stuff from time to time. It will look like white water or milk when finished.

Moose Milk Formula (using NAPA #765-1526 Soluable Cutting and Grinding Oil)

This some people mix 5-1 ratio other like 7-1 you have to experiment a little and find which one works best for you. I personally use;

4 oz Cutting oil
16 oz water
8 oz Isopropyl Alcohol
3 oz Witch Hazel
1 oz Murphy's Oil Soap

Mix in the order listed. And shake between ingredents.

This is an excellent patch lube for shooting roundball. I keep some in a small spritzer bottle (old OFF Bug Juice bottle). You tear you patch strip into lenghts and soak it in the solution. Then lay the saturated cloth on an old window screen outside to dry. After it is dry,. you can still feel the oil in the cloth. You can shoot it this way or just before loading, spritz the cloth to dampen it. Then load the roundball.

Some people also swab their barrels with this stuff. Again, I do not because of the oil in it. Especially if I were shooting sabots. But for a patch lube in your old sidelock, this stuff is easy to make and sure worth a try.
