Pryodex loads vs. FFg
 

Just wonderin...if someone is having great results using 100 grs of FFg. - what would be an equal load of Pyrodex that would come close to duplicating (same rifle, same bullet) their results? Are they almost the same??

By FFG I'll presume that you mean real blackpowder , so 100 grains of Pyrodex is volumetrically equivalent . Most of the other subs are also volumetrically equal , Triple 7 is about 10-15% stronger .

Pyrodex RS and Select are an FFg grade of powder. They are meant to be equal in strength to FFg black powder such as Goex. So they are equal for the most part.

Many of the inline rifles seem to get their best accuracy with 100 grains of FFg powder, or in that area. 100 grains of FFg powder is more then enough to take care of most anything you want to shoot as long as you can place the shot.

Thanks! I'll be testing that this afternoon with some of those Buffalo Bullet sabots. They almost too nice to look to shoot.

Don't weigh your pyrodox charge just put in in a measure that throws a 100 grain charge of FFg.

I've pushed those Buffalo Bullet 375 grain SSB's to 115 grains of Goex 2f and still had good accuracy but the best accuracy came at 100 grains out of the Black Diamond XR. A person I know with the same rifle shoots them at 115 grains and said they will really do damage on an elk with that load...

Testing done - these bullets are keepers. They shoot really good - I have a peep sight on my Black Diamond and at 50 yds I had two in the same hole, using 100 grs Pyrodex. I might put a scope on it, I found a Leupold sitting around tonight I'm not using. I have to figure out what bases it takes.

I do have a question, maybe I'm doing something wrong. When I swabbed the barrel a few times with a patch with alcohol/windshield washing fluid the SSB's got very hard to load. I tried some shooting without swabing the barrel and they load easy. Am I doing something wrong with my swabbing?

The barrel fouling acts almost as a lubricant to the plastic sabots for a shot or two. After that, the fouling builds up enough to make bullets harder to seat. When you swab your barrel with the alcohol/windshield wash mix, you eliminate any lube present.
By the way, Pyrodex should be measured in a VOLUME equal to your black powder load, not by WEIGHT. Pyrodex is less dense than black powder.

As said, you're doing nothing wrong. When you swab you are cleaning the bore. Then the next one will be hard to load although with the SSB's I can shoot three or even four with out swabbing and the accuracy is exceptional.

As for the bases, I bought some Trophy Weaver style bases for my Black Diamond from Cabela's and they are working excellent.

Two questions Rick

Are you using denatured or rubbing (isoprophyl) alcohol?
Are there additives in your windshield solvent ... ie... like for removing bugs or additional anti-freeze protection properties?

Well maybe I lied... I have one more question

How often were you swabbing?
