200 yds with Barns 245's

Hey
Just had to let everyone know.
Today my brother and I were out shooting, our Muzzleloaders.
I was shooting my Knight Disc 50. with the 245 grain boat tails.and 3 -50 grain Pyrodex pellets.
I sighted my rifle 3"high at 100 yds.
Then I went to my 200yd Target.
Man 600 feet sure is a long long way from my shooting table and sand bags.
The first shot I set the cross hairs at the top of the card board, about 3" above the black taregt with white back ground.
I could see the black 12"target real good with the white back ground.
The first shot was right above the target, great.
Second shot I set the cross hairs dead center on the target.
I hit the target 3"low of the bull at 200yds.GREAT GREAT.

I fell in love with the Barns 245's boat tails.
Now what's the foot pounds of the Barns 245's at 200 yds anyone know?
I shot into a 5 gal.bucket filled with packed dirt. The Bullet didn't come out the other side at 200yds .But I'm going to try to find the bullet.
I'm going fishing at the lake from the bank, and once all the rods are out,I 'm going to wash the dirt away, like panning for gold to find the bullet .

So in all, how much drop do you figure you are getting at 200 yards with the rifle sighted in that way? Sounds like you have a great shooting load there. How is the recoil?

I shoot a 250 grain Barnes Expander out of my Wolverine II and the accuracy is exceptional. Since the rifle is not scoped there is no way I am throwing those expensive Barnes bullets out there 200 yards but it is good to hear someone else doing it....

Nice shooting.

Cayugad,
The recoil is a little worse than my7Mag. with 160 grain Nosler.I load the 7Mag.with IMR 7828
with 64.5grains getting what the book says is 2990 Muzzle velocity.
Not real sure what the total drop would be.I'm shooting at the 200yd target from a little hill from down a pipe line.
This is the only 200 yd place I can set up a target. My Brother and I took a 100ft. tape and walked off 200yds with the tape.
Would this make the drop change by shooting down, slightly?
Better go now,got a fishing trip in 8 hrs.

I hope this does not start a big debate; but shooting uphill or downhill the bullet will hit a little higher than flat as the horizontal distance is shorter than the actual slope distance (draw a triangle and you will see what I mean). Unless the slope is pretty steep it will make little difference at 200 yards.

That hill might cause some change in bullet drop ... I really could not say. I guess it would depend on the amount of hill. As for a 7mm Mag.. I never thought mine kicked all that bad although others that shot it thought that it did.

That is still some good shooting.. It is interesting to know that these rifles can shoot that kind of distance. When I first got into this sport many years ago, I had a T/C Renegade .54 caliber and I always thought (with the open sights) that 100 yards was about as far as I dare shoot. Lucky for me where I live a 100 yard shot is rare....

Good shooting... and good luck fishing.

Fine shooting. I shoot the 250gr barnes and find 5-6" drop @ 200 with 3" high POI at 100.

Cayugad, I find recoil very light compared to my RUM's. Thats about right. A 7mmSTW with 140gr bullet and 79gr of RL22.

Very managable.

Hi,
I haven't got one of those instruments that shoots a grade.
But the hill has a gentle slop down to the target.
Now I need to find a place thats flat for 200 yds,and fire a few shots.
And I'll send Barns a e-mail and see what they say, about the load
and 3"high at 100yds,and shooting at 200yds.
We have 8 months to get everything ready for Muzzleloader season, here in Texas.

misread earlier.... Expect 3-4 inch groups at 200 out of any muzzleloader if you tinker enough you'll find the combo(excepting those oddball bad barrels.....)

knights web sight has a ballistic chart on this load and other barns bullits it said sighted dead on at 100 yds 150 grs powder drop at 200 yds is 9 inchs energy i think around 1400
