Moose------I've tried the Fail-safes. They would not group worth a hoot in my rifle. Groups were plate size !!! But I have friends who swears by them----really accuarate out of his rifle. All you can do is try them. If you want to use a "Premium" I would try the Nolser Partitions-----it's the standard by which all others are measured.

i have never used fail safes, i use winchesters silvertip 180gr in my 06, and they shoot excellent groups for me and havent let me down 3 year running now with my moose hunting. i wouldnt use anything less than 180 gr in any type bullet for moose/elk and other big game hunting.

just my .02

When I shoot 30-06, I also shoot Win 180gr Silvertips.

as long as you have a good solid bullet the 180's should do the job. but you might want to look into the 200 and 220's like what was said earlier.

Depends on the range your shooting at if its past 100 yards get some 180 grain core locts pointed soft points but if your shots are around 100 or under get some 220 grain core locts they kill very good.

RE: what grain should I use?

I hunt antelope, deer, and elk w/the 165 grain. It is more than I need for the deer and antelope at the ranges I shoot, and has done short work on any elk I've shot (again at the distances I shoot), but I personally like the same round for all of my hunting. I'd shoot a moose or black bear with it with confidence, but honestly would probably go with a 220 for moose anyway, and for grizzly. Shoot what your most accurate with. Your confidence and subsequent accuracy (ie bullet placement) will have more effect on lethality than the weight. Shoot within a range that will give you the best performance per the weight and design of the specific cartridge you decide to go with.
