British 303

Would a British 303 make a good Elk rifle? I have an old Mark 4 passed down to me and know it shoots dead accurate at 300 yards with no problems. I’ve thought about changing the stock and adding a scope to it.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Sure it would!

Any hunter should know that it is not what you shoot, but how you shoot it!

I think more moose have been killed in Canada with a .303 than with any other cartridge. Like most kids up here a .303 was my first rifle. I would stick with 174 or 180 grain bullets.

Should work fine with good 180 grain bullets. Its power is in the vicinity of the 308. I have a couple of them myself. I have not scoped either of them yet.

A #4 Lee Enfield was my first big game rifle. The 180 grain Sierra spitzer flat base was an accurate bullet out of the old 2 groove barrel. Full throttle loads were going about 2400 with IMR 4320 - about the same power class as the 30/40 Krag. Shot my first elk with this gun in October of 1975. It will do the job out to about 250 yards.

.303 british....been using that caliber rifle for as long as i can remember....some of the bear hunters that lose their guns and luggage in the airlines have used my gun also....have absolutely no complaints...ask the three elk,2 moose an all the whitetail i killed last season..lol...i have a lee enfield mark3....monte carlo stocks topped with a 3x9x50 scope and a harris bipod....great accuracy...prefer 150 grain for all my hunting...so by all means go with the .303

Ask Col.Patterson who shot Ghost And Darkness. His .303 killed his first lion with one shot! Shoot'em between the Shakes!!!
