RE: Did you enter elknut1 ???
BBB---No I didn't enter a calling contest as of yet! Yes, I did consider the ISE Sports Show, but instead went with my gut feeling and wanted to see one first and how it all works! Now that I've got a little more in what goes on I have a better idea on how to prepare myself for future events! Thanks for your encouragement!!!--------Paul

RE: Did you enter elknut1 ???
It was my fault Elknut1 didn't enter! Sometimes I just talk too much. I gave Paul too much to think about Buglin Big Bulls. Made his toes a little frosty. The bad part is Paul would have done very well. Next time I am just going to hush.

RE: Did you enter elknut1 ???
Oh There is no doubt in my mind Paul would have done great !!. Him and his son are both awesome callers, Paul is very educated when it comes to elk (language) and calling them in. That is why i was so excited to hear about him possibly entering !!!. I entered our bugling competition here in Oregon but It is a lot different calling on a stage in front of a bunch of people !!!...I've called a lot of elk in in my past but not too great on stage !!!!---I was a nervous reck , knees were knockin for a little bit, but it was fun , after words I thought heck it wasn't that bad !!! "but I was" :D:D

RE: Did you enter elknut1 ???
gselkhunter is by no means responsible for me not entering the Comp Calling!!!! He just enlightened me on something I had not considered and needed a little time to mull it over. And that's what I did.
I did apprecieate his input and highly respect his opinions & thoughts. BBG--Thanks for the kind words, and yes I'll be entering a few comps this year, not sure about my son, but I am working on him!! ElkNut1 |
RE: Did you enter elknut1 ???
Paul, are you compeating in the Boise comp or just judging? How many competitions are their left this year. I only know of the Boise, and Stanly. I too look foward to seeing you in action.:D

RE: Did you enter elknut1 ???
Jason---I've looked into the one in Boise and haven't confirmed yet that there is one, but I heard there was. If so, yes, I will compete at that one. No, I'm not judging there that I know of!! :)
There's the one in MT. next weekend April 8th, I will be judging at that one and giving a Seminar on Elk Vocalization there, so won't be able to compete. Yes, there's one in Stanley in July sometime. Then there's a big one in Denver coming up. There are of course many smaller ones around in various states, it's just a matter of tracking them down.-----------------------------------------------------Paul |
RE: Did you enter elknut1 ???
Paul,
Are you talking about the ISB jaboree in Stanley in July? IF you are I will be there. I will also be doing a seminar or two. I will be in the competition if I have time. Hope to see you there. elkaholicid Michael |
RE: Did you enter elknut1 ???
Michael---Yes, I'm hoping to attend and compete at the Jamboree. We'll see how it goes as the time gets closer!!
What is the name or subject of your seminars? Thanks-Paul |
RE: Did you enter elknut1 ???
I will be doing seminars on elk hunting tactics and calling. No heckling while I am doing the seminar. Afterwards you can heckle all you want.
Look forward to talking with you more. elkaholicid Michael |
RE: Did you enter elknut1 ???
Michael---You got it!!! :) As a matter of fact, you don't heckle me & I won't heckle you!!! :)
Funny you bring it up though. At the ISE Show in SLC there was a guy doing his best to downplay Jim Horn and one of his tactics. When Jim had- had enough, he saw me sitting in the back row, & proceeded to sick the guy on me. Jim knew I agreed with him on his thoughts. He must have figured the Show must go on!!! So he figured I could take care of his light work!!! :) Fortunately the guy sat down and shut-up!! Jim handled it very well!!! Later--Paul |
RE: Did you enter elknut1 ???
IT's a deal on the heckeling. Was the guy down playing Jim's silent calling routine? I have heard a lot of peole say it doesn't work or it is non sense. They don't realize that they are the one that is doing it wrong. They may be calling to fast, or moving a little bit and getting picked off by a bull that they can't even see. Jim is a good friend of mine and I listen with all my attention when ever he is taking about hunting elk or calling for them. I am looking forward to talking with you more and sharing more knowledge as we did a little bit on Cabin Chat. If you have any seminars coming up let me know I would like to attend.

RE: Did you enter elknut1 ???
Michael---Jim was in the middle of his silent routine, the part where he suggests to inject a small bulls bugle during his series of cow & calf sounds along with a single cows estrous whines.
The heckler argued that you should never inject a bull sound at all while cow calling, no matter if it was silent calling or you had a bull going vocally with just cow calls. Jim mentioned this was the way he'd done it for years, he didn't know why it worked but it does. Those were Jims words!! I've talked with Jim several times on similar issues of what sounds to use at certain times & this was one of them. He is exactly right in what he suggests. I say this because this has been a method I've used for years, and highly reccommend it in our videos which I call "Blind Setups". This was the first Seminar I had seen Jim give. He did a great job!!-------ElkNut1/Paul |
RE: Did you enter elknut1 ???
Paul,
I have known Jim for about seven or eight yearsnow and have been using the silent calling routine for almost that long. It does work. I don;t use it all the time during the early season, but it does work. I have been to several of his seminars and enjoy each one even though I could pretty much say what he is going to say before he says it. Jim is a great guy with a passion for elk hunting that drives him to help others to become addicted to this sport that we all love so much. I guess we all need someone in the crowd to question our setups and how we call. elkaholicid Michael |
