3 Cow Elk in CO!?

Just announced yesterday by the Colorado Division of Wildlife: Over 14,000 "Drought Management' cow elk licenses are to be issued to help bring overpopulation under control, and aid in winter survivability of herds after this recent drought period which has left forage in poor shape and supply. You may still only possess 1 bull or either sex license, but may still apply for 2 additional cow tags for a total of three elk tags! I drew a cow tag for first special rifle season, and even a first ever in ny life doe tag in unit 43. I may still go for one of these additional cow tags for 3rd or 4th season down in unit 66 or 67. There may not be any additional wall hangings around the house, but if the work pays of in the next couple of months, there could be some gooood eatin'for the next year. There are also 2,500 of these tags available for the remainder of archery season. Go to: HTTP://wildlife.state.co.us/

Yeah...I was out yesterday scouting my area in Unit 54, and while there was standing water around from the weeks' rain, it was already drying out again. The multi-agency fire task force is meeting in Denver today to make final determinations on the ban in very specific areas. The spokesperson on the news this A.M. stated they would err on the side of caution as the fire danger rating state-wide has only gone from extreme to very high. I have a buddy who works for the BLM. He's been logging all kinds of overtime doing nighttime recon for campfires. He says they will continue doing air and ground surveillance through hunting season. They are being completely unforgiving when it comes to doling out fines.

and they should be very unforgiving i don't want some idiot catching the woods on fire at night when i'm sleeping and wake up to a forest fire, that would be bad, hopefully their will be more rain coming and keep thins wet till some snow hits the ground.

Snow hit last night! Looks like a couple of inches above 11,000ft. in the Elks, West Elks and Anthracites.

The DOW must be processing these antlerless requests rather quickly. I was surfing the site on Sat. the 14th, saw the opportunity to apply, literally drove to the post office to mail in the form and my cow elk tag arrived in the mail today, and I'm a Hawaii resident at the moment! (retired Army) That's fast service. Of course I'm out the fee for the bull tag for first season and now the cow tag. The Mrs. says that "the pressure is on now." I'll be in unit 68 in the LaGarita. It's a tough hunt, camp and all hunting areas we use are above 10 grand in elevation.
Good luck to all!
