6.5x55 and moose
This fall I'm planning out going hunting for a moose calf and was wondering if I could use a 6.5x55 Swede. I'd be keeping my shots under 100 MAX and probably closer to 50 and only shhoting broadside. I'd pick up some premium Hornady or Federal's. Do you this this would work for a calf moose??

RE: 6.5x55 and moose
Absolutly. Lots of moose have been dropped over in Scandinavia with the 6.5x55. Load up some 140 or 160grs and have at it. You'll be surprised at the capabilities of this round.

RE: 6.5x55 and moose
Konaboy,
The 6.5 is to moose hunting in sweden and Finland as the 3006 is to moose hunting in Ontario. The 6.5 is blessed with excellent sectional density and penetrates more than many more modern rounds. I would think nothing of taking " ANY" moose with one up to 250 yds. Use it and don't worry about it. But why are you only hunting calves? Living in Atikokan you will classify for McGinty's promise of adult tags for the northerners ![]() |
RE: 6.5x55 and moose
I shoot Norma 6.5mm 156gr SP Alaska, great on bull moose, but pricey.
Bought them from Midway USA. Yes, sure will, in a heart beat go for it. |
RE: 6.5x55 and moose
The old Swede will kill any moose on this continent. No Sweat. I use the 140 grain Hornady for longer shots and the 160 RN for closer work.

RE: 6.5x55 and moose
Well since this is my first year applying, i doubt I'll be getting a tag anyway. I hope I get one but since me and my dad will probably both get a deer, we'll have lot's of meat. Thanks for all the reply's.

If you want reassurance, the Swedes call moose, ALG. Goggle that.

RE: 6.5x55 and moose reply to Konaboy.
Konaboy i have a model 96 made in 1899 and just work up a good load with Nosler Part. 140's or Speer G.Slams & do it to it! If you don't reload pick a good brand of ammo with those bullets and practice at the range.[&:]
