ID Elk Hunt

I'll be going Elk hunting for my first time north of Salmon ID, this fall. I would like any information about the area you may have. Is it a good area? We will be staying at a motel in North Fork. Are there any guides in the area that will take you out on a daily basis, instaed of a camp on horse back? Thanks

The hunting can be tough pending on what the weather does to game movement and to how many people and wolves are in a given area. Most of the general season is completely crowded with people. Best advice for this place is to be in shape and know the country. I Hope this will help.

Thanks for the info. Will the increased hunters help move the Elk, like in Whitetail hunting, or will it just drive them deeper? Do you know if there are many logging roads that can get us deeper in?

Most of the loggin roads around here are closed in General Season. The elk can become real scattered after the first day. Most of the units have little pockets where the elk hold up after being messed with. It is no "walk in the park" in this country. The land is large enough in most areas for the elk to get away from people if they really want to. Which unit are you hunting; 21, 21A, 28 ? Are you from Idaho?

RE: ID Elk Hunt

I was looking at an area between North Fork and Gibbonsville and to the East. One of the other guys comming with found an area called race track meadows, west of North Fork towards Shoup. That one however, looks like it has a road leading right to it. I think it would be crowded. I'm from Minnesota. Two of the guys comming with have hunted the Lolo zone, but not Salmon. So the area will be new to us. We know that will be a big challange. That's why I thought a guide for a few days, or longer might be a good idea. I have hunted Whitetail all my life, but it sounds like that may not help me all that much. If you have any more suggestions, or tips I would appreciate it.
