.308 winchester. Same cartridge as the 30-06 but necked down.

The 308 Winchester and the 30-06 Springfield are both the same caliber, which is .308 caliber. The 308 Win. is almost a 1/2 inch (.479") shorter then the 30-06 Spr. The 308 Win. has a case length of 2.015 inches and the 30-06 Spr. has a case length of 2.494 inches. The 308 Win. and the 30-06 Spr. are completely different cartridges all together. The 270 Win. is necked down from a 30-06 Spr. The 280 Rem. is also necked down from a 30-06 Spr. but Remington moved the shoulder forward .051" of an inch so it couldn't be cambered in a 270 Win. The 35 Whelen is necked up from a 30-06 Spr.
Thanks to everyone for correcting my inacurrate use of terminology. I meant to say that the .308 and 30-06 are the same caliber but the .308 win is shorter. Glad you folks caught the error.

Thats true the 7mm wsm has better ballistics. I have done alot research on ballistics and find the the 7mm, the 7mm wsm, and the 300 ultra mag have about the best ballistics for elk.

Only according to Browning and Winchester advertising. They used mild loads and bullets with lower ballistic coefficients for the 7mmrem data in an attempt to mislead people and it seems to have worked on some people.Using the same bullets and with both cartridges loaded to design pressures, the 7mmremmag actually provides very slightly better ballistics.

I can only speak for the 30-06 as my 700 has never let me down. Its dropped its share of game but then again I am sure the 7mm has too, I think what you need to do is buy both. Bobby

I've owned the 30.06, 7mag, and 300 WM. I decided to keep the best 2. The 7mag is gone. The 30.06 does almost everything I could need it for. When more than ALMOST is needed, the 300 WM takes over.

Maybe it was the rifle (Ruger M77) but the 7mag wasn't as accurate and kicked more than the 30.06 (Winchester M70) and the 300 WM (Remington 700 BDL).
