#1 THING TO DO, IS GET A GOOD HEADLAMP AND USE IT!! Even if you are riding familiar trails, those potholes always find you in the dark!

that and rig a bow rack, (or rifle) and get some mounts to hold a back pack. It works great for Mn whities, Havent tried them in Ak, they do work as I know a fella who has used them for bou in a small area.

Biggest pitfal was gear falling off and gettin abused in a hurry!!!

its silent, quick and you can haul a ton of gear on them if you walk beside it, you could get a crap load of meat out! or get a cart, took a hole LARGE MN whitetail out on a cart.....sooooo nice!

You can't take a mtn. bike into a wilderness area. It's wheeled.

i have been hunting elk on mounain bikes for 7 years now, but the guys i hunt with have been doing it for like twenty five, and we usually kill 2 out of three of the elk we get every year on our bikes, i dont know what the reg are in your neck of the woods but here we have old logging roads which are banned from motor vehical use all hutning season so that of course is where we hunt, and do very well, we also have trailers built to pack out the elk when we do shoot it. By the way, what kind of bike do you have? and does anyone want to buy mine?

If you come up with a good system, please post it. I would be very interested in seeing what you have done. Also, I was thinking about rigging up some sort of a cart, but haven't started yet (I'm in an apartment, so room is kind of limited). If anyone has cart plans, that would be helpful as well.

Brian, the one I used was from cabela's. Someone else owned it but you hooked the handle over the front of the seat, which ran on the top of the top bar and in front of the seat post. Worked GRRRRRREAT! No hitches, easy on easy off, it didnt sway at all (surprisingly) in the 2 miles back to the truck. It dont matter what the bike is using a system like this. I dont remember what the cart was called but it was the one that looks like a ladder, it would have been nice to have one maybe of some hard plastic with a simple frame but this one was definatly indestructable from the looks of it, where the plastic version would die fast I am sure.

Just saw a cart from cabelas my freind used to pack in blind and gear 3 miles up a ranch road to waterhole. He also scored a big antelope this week and wheeled it out. The cart is 1" aluminum and is bolted together. If you can get the solid rubber tires you could build one easily.
