Default 54Cal or 50Cal for Elk

Just wondering what you all think about which caliber muzzleloader would be better for Elk. I am thinking about getting a 54cal, but wasn't sure. Is there a big difference in distance shooting between the two?

Go with the 54. More bang for your buck. Max effective range for either is about 100 yards.

I have no experience with the .50, But the .54 knocks em' flat. I keep shots under 100 yds.

I vote for 54 caliber. It has never let me down.

I just got done cutting up my cow elk. I used my lyman .50 to get her. I put her down at 238 yds(Lasar range) with a 300 grain powerbelt aerotip. I have took mule deer with the same gun, no problem. I do know is there is alot of different bullets out there for the .50. Knowing the gun is the best way to fill the freezer. Bench time with different bullets is where its at.

238 Yards ????? I have no idea about inline smokepoles ( which I'm assuming your using ) but I would never shoot that far at an animal with a blackpowder. If you decide to use a traditional flint lock or percussion rifle keep your ranges at 100 yards or under.

Either will do the job with good shot placement. If you can shoot good with the 54, go with it. But if it is too much punch, go with the 50. A well placed 50 shot is better than a poorly placed 54.

238yrds??? Was this before or after the drugs took affect? I have never seen a blackpowder shoot that far with any type of accuracy. Hell, thats only 62 yrds shorter than my max (ethical) range with my 30-06.
Let me see you pull that crap in my neck of the woods and you'll find out what that smokepole can really do!!!

Longspur... go with the 54 cal. you will like it.
