RE: Is a 30-06
The 30-06 will easily kill anything from rabbits to moose and everything in between, the biggest of black bears included. Although it seems that it not suitable any more for hunting anything larger than deer, depending on who you talk to. Seems you now need the latest ultra mag to do that.;)
If I were after big Grizzlies I would opt for a bigger cartridge, just in case I suddenly became the main menu item, but the 30-06 will take them down as well. The 30-06 is an excelent choice for a "do all" cartridge. |

i shoot a ruger m77 30 06 and it works for anything.

RE: Is a 30-06
I would go with a .300 Win. Mag. Some people do use them to hunt the great bears with the right load. Good luck.

An alternative to the 06 would be a .35 Whelen, has more power and the kick isn't to bad. If you didn't want a mag, I'd go with this cartridge.

Because like BB said you might be on the menu and those things don't go down easily and that picture perfect broadside shot might not open up until he's munchin on your leg. |

I know, I'm just pokin fun and feeding the fire.;):D

06 always puts them down that is when I hit them.

RE: Is a 30-06
If I was to strictly hunt bears or the big browns in paticular I would own and shoot .375 H&H, yes It might be a overkill but that way I could try to shoot them with my bow first and if and when things go wrong, that shoud put them down in a hurry! If I couldn't own a .375 then I might try a .416 Rem, or heck since I am dreaming anyway why not a.358 Shooting Times Alaskan that should do the trick!;)
If I am not mistaken the .358 STA is a necked up 8mm Rem right? And the 8mm Rem is based of the .375 H&H rigth? So the .358 STA is essentially a 375 H&H necked down to .358 right? I ask this because I think I know, but I wouldn't bet my life on it. ElkampMaster I know you know the answerer to this so please tell me if I am right or wrong! |
