Comments on Elk Hunting in White River NF Near Meeker
Does anyone have any comments/recommendations on hunting the White River NF near Meeker, CO? I have hunted prive land very successfully near there but I can't spend that much money every year. Besides, I would like to do my own hunt anyway.

Elk2901, What time of year? Bow or rifle or muzzle loader? I know the elk population numbers are good. Call DOW and ask for the officers name and number and call him, they give good base info. Get a map that shows NF, BLM lands. And mark areas on the map to look at. Are you coming from out of state? I know a few guys that hunt over that way, rifle season.

I live in Arkansas. I prefer rifle season, 1st or 2nd combined. I don't have any idea how heavily that area is hunted.
I bow hunt whitetails here in Arkansas and would like to try archery/elk also, but I don't have any experience in calling a bull elk. I call turkeys, but all you have to do there is just make a noise and they will respond if it is a nice sunny day. Elk are probably more sophisticated about responing to a call.
