thanks for the kind words, I don't think they would leave me out in the cold, just not in the right place at the right time, you know how that goes sometimes....I actully saw more game than the others, just not the right kind... 2 chocolate brown phase black bears, beautiful, all kinds of muleys, coyote and a bobcat..I'll get my turn in time....:)

This year....NW CO, first rifle season.
9 hunters===5 Elk hangin. Out of the four that didn't tag out 3 had shots and passed for various reasons and 1 never had a shot in five days.
Pretty good year when you can bust the 50% mark.

I went First season in CO in section 74. I got a yearling cow on the last day, my buddy got a calf. I wounded a cow then spent 5 hour tracking untill I lost the trail, I think I hit her leg. One buddy watched a 5X5 bull for about 10 min at about 200 yds he though it was on private land. We found the bull had been right on the fence but on the public land side. Another buddy spent 3 days calling to 2 bulls that wouldn't leave private land, the bulls were coming in one day and someone on that land got between them and my buddy and started cutting wood with a chainsaw. One buddys wife hunted third season section 751, she got a 5X6 bull at 25 yds. The bull took two steps and went over the edge of the ridge and slid 100yds down the ridge. That was a tough pack out, the trail was too narrow to get any horses there.

Can't tell which one of the 9 you were? Got elk, Got opportunity, Got no opportunity. Have you harvested an elk previously? IMHO, anytime an elk camp breaks 50% it is doing well.

1 Went but didn't shoot. Saw 1 nice one but no shot opportunity.
Camp had 9 hunters. Three killed bulls. No cows.

3 guys went to NW Colorado 2 had Muzzleloader tags and one had archery tag....Don and myself had Muzzleloader tags and Both took nice 6x6's The Archery guy had a shot opt. on a 5x5 @ 20 yrds but didnt shoot for shooting window was to small for him he thought to clear an arrow through. But camp was 66.666666666666666666666666666667% in an area that is 23% on the archery and 38% on muzzleloaders

I forgot this ......But The archery Guy in Colorado came back to Washington and on Oct 30th the opener of our Spike bull season he shot a 1x2 bull on opening day ...seen one elk and took him home :D

Hunted Colorado again this year. Tuff hunting, but luck again was with me and connected with a small bull. Good flavored animal and should hold me and my family over until next season.

I was out during 50-60 times (morning & evening hunts, multiple times per day) and was in elk almost everytime out no shots at bulls, but cows. I ended up not taking one with my bow, but shot a cow 2 weeks into rifle season.

Went elk hunting this year, no opportunities, will try for a cow later this year on damage permits. Have shot elk in the past though.

Returned a few days ago from New Mexico. The Lord blessed me with a nice cow. Nothing quite like elk hunting.

Went archery hunting on the reservation since I never get drawn. Had 13 elk in range but only one raghorn which my tag was for and he had brush between us and no shot. Had a good time and got several 6x bulls called in to 20-30 feet. One was 15 feet and had his left eye gouged out and bleeding from a fight. Maybe I will get drawn next year.

Got a cow elk this year on Sep. 24th, with a 6 point boyfriend looking on. He was nice but not as big as my bull from last year, so I just took the easier shot and the better meat.

Went last year in CO. Had a bull tag, but only saw cows. Had a bull that was doing a good job of staying 2 steps ahead of me. I knew about where he was, but could never catch up to him. He spent 4 days tormenting me by crapping in my footprints, staying in the timber and circling my position, crossing the meadow around the bend from me(right after I'd just walked through there). I was hooked! I started to plan this years hunt as soon as I got off the mountain. Drew this year, but didn't get to go due to getting jerked around closing on my house. The heavens and my wife willing, I'll be out there again next year.

Hard to say. In Colorado, 20% of license holders harvest and 80% don't.
On the internet, seemingly "everyone" shoots more perfectly,
On the internet, seemingly "everyone" gets their animal,
so it makes it difficult for folks who didn't get theirs to jump in and report it....
After all, this is just a role call without much advice being offered on how to fix problems that may have caused "tag soup".

In an odd sort of way, IMHO one learns more about elk hunting when you DON'T get one than when you do (especially getting one on a "quick and easy" hunt), providing one hunts actively almost every day of the season. For those who did report in "with no elk" I can tell most of them have been "bit by the bug" and the "no elk" problem is going to be resolved as soon as possible --- unfortunately one have to wait a year in between seasons.

My hat is off to those who tried, struggled, suffered, pondered, adjusted and gave it all they had --- been there, done that!

My first elk hunt - near Meeker, CO. 1st Combined season. Got a 4x5 with a 350 Rem Mag at 300 yards. I am lookng forward to next year.

TO new to do any hunting tagged along on one trip but no kill. Scouted about 6 times this season and find a total of maybe 2 good spots. But will keep posted on next seasons hunts.

Hunted my butt off for all 7 days of my rifle bull season in October. Wettest, foggiest season I remember.....got skunked. No shot opportunity.
But I had a blast trying!:D

Thats why there is next year.:D My first three tries came up empty. Fourth try I connected and thought I had it all figured out. Fifth year, I Found out that I didn't have it all figured out. Since then I have been pretty lucky. There is a lot of luck involved. You can do everything right and come out wrong.

I've been in SW Colorado 3 times

1999-cow elk (only one of 6)
2001-cow elk ( 3 hunters, 3 cows)
2003-5x3 bull (4 hunters, 1 bull,3 cows)

Can't wait to go again in October '05.

Every time I go I keep waiting for reality to set in. Truthfully it is a high population area, and those I hunt with take the first legal animal they can. They are all trophies to us and we love to eat 'em.

I like this forum because there are people like that who hang out here. While they all like taking nice racks, they appreciate everything they take.

This was my 4th year Elk hunting (Is there anything else???) I go twice a year. Once muzzleloader(Backpack!!!) and the other rifle. I have scored once with my ML on a cow this year!!!!!! 3 times with my rifle. 2 cows and this year I finally got a nice Bull!!!!!!
I do agree with you that, Cow or Bull they are both trophies. Ithought that getting a Bull would be the end all......... But except for what everyone else thought, I was as excited on the Bull as I was with the Cows. Although I would really like to take a nice Bull with my trusty side-lock!!! Been very close..But no Elk Enchilada!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So that makes.............4 years........4 Elk!!!!!!!!!! and at least 4 pots of tag stew!!!!
