TRUE STORY FROM OREGON
GRANTS PASS, Ore. - The one that got away. Bow hunter Johnny Costello had nightmares for a month when he couldn't recover a Roosevelt bull elk he shot last year near Grants Pass.
But this year, Costello not only downed a bull elk, he downed an elk with seven-by-eight point antlers that measured 365.5 inches. That measurement means the elk is the second largest Roosevelt taken by a bow hunter in North America. Costello's friends helped him take the 800 pounds of meat out of the woods and into the butcher shop. But when the butcher cut into the prime rib area, he stopped. There was Costello's arrow tip embedded in a rib from last year. He told Mail Tribune Outdoors reporter Mark Freeman, "I never thought I'd see him again." And you can bet, the elk wished he didn't. |
