Does anyone know any tips or rules of thumb for field judging Canadian Moose?

If you consider that the back of the skull (around where the ears are) to the tip of the nose in not quite 3 feet long, then the rack has to be around 1 1/2 times as long as the head to start being a good one. All of which is moot point with me. If its a legal moose down it goes, tags are too hard to come by to waste time trying to figure how wide a rack is. Moose meat is as good as anything you can drag out of the bush, don't let one walk away.:)

I agree with Terry, if its brown its down. Can't beat the meat of a young moose! Althought this year I would love to see a huge bull walk out!

I always watch for younger smaller bulls if I have to take a bull. Not trophy hunter. Just in it for the meat and the fun of being out hunting.

The length of the head works good for judging spread. But I agree with the other guys on the any legal bull idea.
My rule of thumb for judging moose is. Does it have antlers? Yes...... Ok good.......BOOM!

I suggest you try and get your hands on the Video Antler Giants. The hunting portion isn't great but they do go through measurements of different species of moose and it may help you with what to look for when judging a shooter in your mind.

If going with an outfitter ask them for pointers prior and upon arrival. Outfitters, guides are after trophies while the average joe like us is after a freezer. I always aim for the freezer if he has a mantle that is a bonus.
