Default which gun? 30-06 or .300 magnum

Hey fellas,
I'm planning on purchasing my first rifle pretty soon. I live in Northwestern Ontario and plan on hunting moose, whitetails and black bears.
I'm looking for one gun that does all of the above animals.
I've basically nailed down two guns, but not sure which one to get. Both are the right price or about $550 canadian.
The links to those two guns are:

and

http://www.sirmailorder.ca/cgi-bin/s...R_ID=103343749

one is 30-06 remington (comes with scope and all) and the other one is .300 magnum savage.

which one should I get?

thanks

Magnus

SIR also sells the savage package rifle in .30/06. It goes for $500(CDN) plus taxes and shipping, I think. You mentioned that this will be your first rifle. The .30/06 won't kick as hard as the .300 Win Mag and the ammo will be cheaper. The .30/06 is more than enough rifle for the animals you mentioned. This is the rifle I'd choose between the two you listed.

From what I've read and heard the Remington M710 is a POS.

Thats my take on it.

Maqnus, being from T-Bay and doing the majority of your hunting in Northwestern Ontario, the answer is easy. Go with the .300 Win Mag, it will do everything the 30-06 will do plus more.

A group of us hunt near Dryden and the rifle of choice even with the locals is the 300 Win Mag. You'll probably hunt moose in clear cuts and will want to reach out to 300 yards flat and with more power behind it. It may be overkill for deer but you can always buy a lighter bullet (165gr instead of 180gr).

I haven't heard anything good about the remington 710 on the Gun Board but others have said the Savage is accurate right out of the box.

Just my two cents.

I can add that I've not heard much positive about the 710. All kinds of negatives.

I'd go for the 300 win mag. It can be loaded down to the '06. But with similar sized bullets, the 300 is superior. It averages 250fps more speed, 400ft-lbs more energy and is 5&quot; flatter at 300yds. This is an average with both shooting 180 gr bullets.

The 30-06 is a good bear and moose gun. But, from my experience the 300win mag is better. JMHO

I'd go for the .300 mag but in a Rem Mod 700. I agree with others...heard nothing good about the 710.

Welcome Magnus
I would go with the 300. I don't own one of
the 710's but from what I have read from these guys I would avoid it like the plague
If the 710 is so wonderful why dont they chamber it in the mag's. The 300 will have more recoil but if you can convince Jen then you can over come anything <img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle>

The .300 magnum certainly has the edge here...but only if you can shoot it.You don't say if you have any other shooting experience but if not, then the .30-06 will a better choice for you.Recoil in a .300 gets to be brutal after a box or two,and since accuracy is a must, practice is essential.Get a Savage, forget the Remington.

No animal on the american continents requires more than a .30-06. With the .300 mag, if I remember right, you get about the same case length, just fatter right? You're shooting 180-225 gr bullets while a .30-06 is shooting 150-180 gr at roughly the same velocity. You can handload 225 .30-06 to match the .300 mag, but it'll kick your arm off, about the same as the .300 mag. I'd never hunt anything bigger than a coyote on my continent with any rifle but a .30-06, lots of people use the .300 mag, or .300wsm or .300, but you don't need to, as far as I'm concerned, the .30-06 is the perfect rifle, if you can find a good solid barrel that shoots great, you can push your bullets as heavy and fast as the .300 mag, but you don't need to do that either, 180 gr in .30-06 can take anything you can ask it to.
