RE: which gun? 30-06 or .300 magnum
I have shot a couple 300 win mags, WOW, I hate that recoil.
I bought a Marlin MR7, 30-06. My friend hand loaded me up some 150gr, pushing them at just under 3000 fps. Plenty accurate for deer out to 300. Would go bigger for blackbear, don't know about moose. I can shoot the 150 gr all day long, the 185 gr he handloaded starts to kick good.
I always view the 300 as a 300+yd gun, under that the 30-06 should work well enough as long as you can shoot it accurately (which less recoil will help with).

Magnus,
Sounds like the debate will never end. I'm glad you asked the question and not me. I am new to this site. I am going to go with a new Ruger M77 in 30 .06. I have found in all the rifles I own this one does the job and then some. Save your shoulder and become an accurate shooter before you become a knock down power freak. Blessings.

Hello all and thanks for your replies.
Yes this is tough on what to get and what not to get. I guess I should have when I wrote this tell ya all that I've only shot a .22 and 410 and 12 gauge before
I guess I'll go with the 30-06 to begin with anyway. A friend of mine that has more experience is thinking about getting a 300 mag and we will prolly hunt together, so with those two guns, we should be quite well equiped.
I'd like to thank you all for your postings, of course if you want to keep on giving me advice, go nuts
thanks all!!

I think your choice of the 30-06 is probably the way I would go too . I have two of them and they make a good all around gun . But I'm not impressed with the remington .JMHO

i just bought my first rifle last year. i bought a winchester 30-06 but i would have loved to be able to aford a ruger 30-06. but the 30-06 is so far the best gun for me. i go fear bear hunting and it isn't too big to do to much damage. i go deer hunting with it(works great for deer) and would hope to draw an antilop, mule deer, moose, elk lince and the 30-06 would handle them at long range.
