Colorado unit 65

Around 8/15 I'll be traveling out to the ridgeway area to do some Elk/Deer scouting in the unit 65 Uncompagre Wilderness area, and am wondering if it is a good idea to carry my 44 mag? What are the chances of encountering abear or a lion this time of year? What are the laws on carrying this time of year? Is there a state permit that I need? Has anyone on this board hunted the area in the past and how does it compare to other OTC areas.Any advice would be appreciated.

I would say the chances of encountering a bear or mountain lion are slim to none. I do a lot of hiking (as I live in Colorado) during the summer, and have yet to see either a bear or a mountain lion. I just got back from a trip to the San Juans, and other that a few mulies and a bunch of mountain goats, I didn't see much else. That's not to say it's not possible, and I guess it's always better to be safe than sorry.

You should not need to carry your 44, not likely to see a bear or lion. The area is good hunting, however bring your walking shoes, it is very steep and good thick timber.

Are there small local Elk herds present this time of year,or mostly migrating animals later on? What elevation ranges do they frequent now?
