RE: Elk season
I can too Elkshed.;) I am starting to get my gear ready. I need to decide if I am going to stick with carbon arrows or switch back to my old XX-78's? I bought a 1/2 dozen carbon arrows this spring when I bought my new bow. My old hunting arrow was heavy. I shot 2219 XX-78's with 125-grain Muzzy 3-blade broadheads. I just feel more confident hunting elk with a heavy arrow & broadhead. My bow shoots the carbons well with 100-grain Muzzy heads. The 125-grain heads just don't fly as straight on my carbon arrows?
All of my other gear is in great shape. The one item I want to buy before hunting season starts is a SKB hard sided double bow case. I also would not mind buying a new pair of hunting boots. I only have one ultra light pair of hunting boots. My other two pair are kind of heavy. I dont really need the boots so I might not buy another pair until next year. |

RE: Elk season
WolfKiller---I wouldn't worry too much about 100grn heads versus 125grn heads. Those Muzzys will bring an elk down with no problem. My son and I both shoot Gold Tip carbons with Muzzys on the end. Difference is he shoots 5575 GT with 100grn 3blade, he setup is right at 400grns. He's taken 5 bulls with that setup, all pass throughs. I on the other hand shoot 7595 GT with 125grn heads at about 425grn, I too have had the same success on elk with that setup. To see a real penetration difference with a like setup you'd have to go another 150grns heavier to see any significant penetration difference. I'd stick with 400grn minimum and hitem where they live, you'll do great! Good Luck--ElkNut1

RE: Elk season
I shoot the exact setup as Elknut (I must be doing something right!?!? :D). I agree totally that 100's vs 125's really doesn't matter. The shot and confidence in making that kill shot means more than 25 gr. One thing I noticed with picking 100's or 125's is your arrow length. 100 vs 125 might be throwing off Front of Center % and affecting arrow flight. Also, 26 days and counting for Elk hunting in Utah!

RE: Elk season
28 days, just went and bought a couple of cow calls and a bugle. The E.L.K. foundation bugle can't be beat! I also bought a kit for scent control. Detergent, soap, spray,..ect, and then we also bought this lotion stuff for your skin and hair? There was a guy doing a elk seminar, and he continuously praised it as his fav. means of scent control. So we got two bottles to try out.
