Have killed elk 300yds of the road but usauly dont go past 8 miles seems like past 2 miles you can get away from road hunters and with in 7 miles you can stay away guys with horses and outfitters.

2-3 miles for elk and mulies for me. Four years ago I was on my way to my favorite afternoon spot and got a little 5X5 who fell less than 5' from the road. Other times I have tracked cows for 5-6 miles before catching them. Kinda neat to watch the road hunters pass all the good spots.

I'm just curious, I've been wanting to know this for awhile. Is it legal to have a helicopter and land it several miles into a public piece of land?
NOT in Alaska it "isn't". In fact, if your stranded and near death, "if" they come and get you with a chopper, they will NOT haul out your meat or camp. They will save you, but nothing else. You have to fly everything else out with an airplane!!

You can use a chopper for fishing, but that's it.

BTW, it's much cheaper to hire an airplane to haul you into the bush, than it is to feed and care for a hay burner!!! Been there and done that!!!

I normally hunt alone and over the past few years I have to limit how far I will hunt from the truck. I used to be able to easly go 5 - 7 miles now I'm down to 2 - 3 miles. I won't hunt farther than I can get an elk out myself in 2 days. This is one of the disadvantages of hunting alone. Getting old sucks.

As far back as it takes to get into elk, from under a half mile to over 15 hiking.I usually have a few friends along to help pack out the meat.

I'm just curious, I've been wanting to know this for awhile. Is it legal to have a helicopter and land it several miles into a public piece of land? I mean can you fly a helicopter 15+ miles into the most remote corner of a WMA, then get out set up camp, and hunt that way? Just curious.
I'd say it depends on the state however in mine as far as I know its completely legal as long as the helicopter did not aid you in anyway spotting or guiding other hunters to game. If you simply hauled your camp in and out with it I don't know of any law against it here. The exception would be in a wilderness areas. You cannot fly any aircraft over designated wilderness areas in Utah. Probably the same in other states, but I don't know.

normally 2.5 miles to deer stand but once it was 10 miles through the mountains, a river and 3 swamps. That was a sucky day.
