(16)Recap of Several Hunting Incidents involving PHs and Clients

Hunting big game is intrinsicaly dangerous. This year two PH's I know well have been run over by buff, one badly chewed by a lion, three mauled by leopard and one got a swat from an ele cow - and we still have two months of hard hunting to go! Also these are not complete stats for the year as I have herd of a couple of other maulings on PH's I don't really know, never mind that ele's have killed two clients and one tracker so far...
I had a nasty run in with a lioness. She absorbed 2 .458 and two .375 bullets as she came on and finally died riddled with fire from my .41 and John's .44. We were running backwards and shooting and she died on top of my rifle! John hit her with what looked like a perfect shot with his .458- but the bullet actually passed over the lung and slipped out under the shoulder blade without doing any damage. A solid from my rifle went through her from end to end- but passed between the lungs- It would have killed her but didn't stop the charge. The other two shots broke a hip and a shoulder but were not imediately lethal hits. It was a good wake up call!

Just heard that PH Rolf Rowher was gored by a buffalo in the Selous yesterday afternoon. He has been evacuated to South Africa. Don't have much details but apparently got a horn up his thigh and main injuries are to his legs.
Rohwer was mauled by a lion several years ago. He shot the lion with a .458 Win. Mag. using a 500 grain Federal Trophy Bonded Bear Claw bullet as it charged him. His bullet struck the lion in the chest, but did not stop the lion's charge. So, the lion pounced on Rohwer and gave him a good going over before finally crawling off and dying.

If you've read Death in The Long Grass you will probably recall the saga of Peter Hankin. Peter was a well known PH in Zambia. In September of 1974 he was guiding clients on a hunt in Zambia's Luangwa Valley. One night while sleeping in his tent, he was attacked by a lioness.
"At five yards she gathers her hind legs beneath her flattened, lean body, the hind claws gripping the earth for purchase. The manthing is still asleep, unaware of crouching death so near, his breathing deep and regular in the cat's lain-back ears. In a flash of dark motion she is in the air, claws extended like naked linoleum knives, the light mosquito netting shredding before her charge. Her impact hurls the man from his bed and onto the ground. Before he is even awake, there is the soggy snap of crushing vertiebrae, then silence. For Peter Hankin, one of Central Africa's most experienced professional white hunters, the last safari is over."
Well, while in the Northern Luangwa this September we had the honor of visiting Peter Hankin's grave. It was a sobering experience as we realized that we were hunting an area renouned for man eating lions.

Patrick Smith, 34, was killed in front of his wife, Julie, in the Masai Mara National Reserve on Sunday, officials said. His wife managed to leap out of the way. "He was trampled by an elephant while on a nature trail with his wife," said Connie Maina, spokeswoman for the Kenya Wildlife Service. "This is a terrible accident."
The couple had been married for just a week, Maina added. They had arrived in Kenya for their honeymoon and were staying at the luxury Richard's Camp lodge in the game reserve. The camp is on the edge of a forest in the Masai Mara conservation area, about 100 miles southwest of the capital, Nairobi.
The couple set out for their nature walk Sunday morning and were with a Masai guide just 330 yards outside the camp when the elephant attacked, Maina said. "We think the elephant must have been at very close proximity to the couple and was surprised," she said. "They don't normally do this kind of thing. It is terrible. The wife saw what happened. I am told the wife is OK but is shaken up."
Jake Grieves-Cook, chairman of the Kenya Tourist Board, said the elephant knocked over their guide but the wife escaped injury. Tourist officials said the tented camp was closed for several days after the killing. Kenya's elephant population is estimated at 35,000, down from a peak of 167,000 in the 1970s due to rampant poaching. According to Kenya's Wildlife Service, the last tourist killed by an elephant in Kenya was in 2000. But there are frequent incidents between elephants and villagers in rural areas. In August, Kenyan officials shot dead a pair of rogue elephants who had killed four people in the north.

Lion attack leaves nine injured

Nine people, including four brothers, suffered serious injuries when a pride of lions attacked a home in Wajir District. Three brothers were taken to the Garissa Provincial General Hospital in critical condition after sustaining bites and scratches during a four-hour fight with the beasts, which had invaded a family kraal at Biyamadhow village.
Six other victims were taken to Wajir District Hospital. Doctors said one of the patients would be referred to Nairobi for specialised treatment.
Villagers said the brothers were attacked as they attempted to ward off the lions, which killed two camels. A resident, Mr Kahie Muktar, who mobilised a rescue team, accused the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) of failure to contain the lion menace. Muktar said KWS officers had failed to act even after residents complained of loss of livestock to marauding lions. He said herdsmen had abandoned grazing grounds for the lions, but the beasts pursued and attacked them and their livestock at alternative sites. Angry residents have given KWS a week relocate the lions, failure to which they would poison them.

AN American visitor to Namibia died at a farm in the Gobabis area after he was gored by an oryx on Thursday. The gemsbok attacked the 65-year-old American between 08h00 and 09h00 on Thursday, the Namibian Police reported on Friday. A Police spokesperson, Sergeant Stephan Nuuyi, added yesterday that it was reported that the man had set out on a walk with the aim to take some photographs earlier thatmorning.
He apparently encountered the gemsbok, got too close to the animal, and was attacked and killed. The incident happened at farm Avitra along the
Gobabis-Nina road, the Police reported.

Statistics
Available statistics show that in the five rural district councils of Binga, Guruve, Hwange, Kariba, Bulilima and Mangwe, elephants killed more than 300 people, while hippos, buffaloes, crocodiles, snakes and wild dogs claimed the remainder.
Deaths also occurred when victims were attacked while guarding their fields or were out fishing or hunting.
Binga and Guruve districts recorded the highest number of conflicts between game and people, while the figures were small in Hwange and Bulilima.
“Several people have been killed by elephants, buffaloes and hippos while crocodiles have also maimed others. It is a common occurrence especially during the cropping season,” said Tyros Mudimba, who works for an anti-poaching patrol team in Binga.
Casualties could, however, be higher, with Mudimba saying some cases were not reported because of the inaccessibility of certain places such in Binga.
“We rely on the word of mouth in some areas as we cannot access them. It’s not surprising that the number of people trampled may be even more,” said Mudimba.

South African professional hunter Christo Kaiser has been killed by an elephant in Botswana.
Kaiser, 40, the owner of Unico Hunting Safaris in Lephalale (formerly Ellisras), died on Friday, a close friend of his, Phillip Bronkhorst, said on Saturday. "He was killed in the northern part of Botswana on Friday morning. He was killed by an elephant," said Bronkhorst. He said no details of the incident were known, but nobody else was injured.
Kaiser had been accompanying four Spanish hunters who wanted to shoot elephant. His body would remain in Maun, Botswana, until a post mortem had been carried out. Bronkhorst said the rest of the group was on its way back to South Africa.

A CHARGING elephant on Sunday trampled a 48-year-old Mushumbi Pools man to death while his wife, son and other villagers watched helplessly.
Mendas Muzerengeni was killed at around 8pm when he had gone out to scare the animals from his field.
Mashonaland Central police spokesman Inspector Michael Munyikwa confirmed the incident saying the man was in the company of his son Taxi (17) when the incident occurred.
Insp Munyikwa said the two positioned themselves at different spots and began making noise in a bid to scare away the elephants.
One of the jumbos got irritated and charged towards Muzerengeni.
It gored Muzerengeni with its tusks and carried him for about 300 metres.
The man’s wife Ms Fenisia Mhako and other villagers, who had rushed to the scene after hearing Muzerengeni’s screams, watched helplessly from a distance. — HR.

Harare - A rogue buffalo killed three people in Zimbabwe's wildlife-rich Zambezi Valley, including a husband and wife working in their fields, a newspaper reported on Monday.
Thirty-three-year-old Adam Wesile was killed as he tried to rescue his wife Felistas from the buffalo in their cotton field in Mushumbi, northern Zimbabwe, said the Herald.
"When they saw (the buffalo), the couple believed it was a cow resulting in the woman advancing towards it, intending to drive the beast away," the paper reported police spokesman Michael Munyikwa as saying.
It was, however, too late for the woman to run away when she realised it was a buffalo, the paper said.
She was killed on the spot, and her husband was injured as he tried to rescue her. He died after being admitted to the nearby Guruve hospital, the paper said.
Another 25-year-old man identified only as Chimanga was killed by the buffalo on the same day while collecting firewood, the Herald said. It did not specify when the attacks took place.
The buffalo is still on the loose and police have warned villagers in the area to be careful. Game rangers are trying to hunt down the animal, the paper said.
There are regular cases of people being killed by wild animals here, especially elephants, crocodiles and buffaloes.
Life is how you spend the time between hunting trips.

Maputo - Wild animals killed more than 30 people in Mozambique's central Manica province last year, Vista news reports.
Dinis Lissave, Manica provincial director for Agriculture, told the Maputo newspaper Noticias that attacks by elephants, crocodiles, snakes and hippo had caused 37 deaths, all of them subsistence farmers.
Lissave said there were more such fatalities last year than in previous years. He attributed this to an increased presence of people living close to game parks

Buffalo gores man to death

An aggressive bull buffalo killed a man and hampered the retrieval of his body on a farm near Bethlehem on Wednesday, Free State police said.
Sergeant Mmako Mophiring said on Thursday that Sam Shongwe, 26, was returning from a pit latrine to a fenced area with two homes when the buffalo attacked at about 10:00.
Shongwe's older brother saw the buffalo toss Shongwe into the air, piercing both legs and slicing open one thigh to the genitals.
Shongwe's older sister, returning from fetching water, saw him lying helplessly. Wanting to pull him into the yard, she threw a stone to try to scare off the buffalo.
But the buffalo turned towards her and she ran away and hid in her house within the enclosure.
The police were only informed of the attack at 17:30 when people arrived home with a cell phone.
On arrival at 17:45, the police climbed over a stile, as the main gate to the farm was locked.
Five buffalo were near the yard, with the bull close to the fence, Mophiring said.
The bull approached police when they tried to retrieve the body, so the people within the enclosure lit a huge fire to scare it off.
After they managed to get the body into the enclosure, police fired a few shots to scare off the buffalo, before carrying the body to the stile.
The officers ran with the body, burning grass torches, and carried it over the stile to a waiting mortuary van.
Mophiring said the farmer could not be contacted as his cell phone had been switched off.
A resident told police that a buffalo had attacked a man in his house in march, outside the fenced homesteads enclosure, while he was sleeping.

I received a sad message yesterday from Andy Hunter with whom I hunted with last September in Chewore North.
His long time tracker and friend, Mendas, was killed by a Bull Elephant in the field next to his home this week.
Mendas was trying to scare off five elephants that were destroying his small cotton crop, when a Bull Elephant charged and killed him instantly.
Mendas was an outstanding tracker and a fine provider for his family. I was fortunate to have been invited to his home in rural Zimbabwe this past September and I will always remember his warm hospitality and friendship.
Mendas will be missed by many and I wish him Godspeed.

Two staff members of the Ministry of Environment and Tourism lost their lives this week after an aggressive bull elephant charged and trampled them.
The incident took place on Monday afternoon in the Kavango Region.
Minister of Environment and Tourism, Willem Konjore, yesterday announced the death of 58-year-old Kapinga Kasanga and 38-year-old Tekla Haseb who were attacked while executing their duties in the wilderness.
According to Konjore, investigations have shown that a solitary elephant bull could have been angered by the unexpected presence of MET staff in the area.
“The elephant still appeared aggressive and as a result it has been destroyed by the officials of the ministry,” Konjore said.
The minister expressed his heartfelt condolences to families of the bereaved.
He further urged Namibians to exercise great care in areas where elephants and other dangerous animals are present to avoid loss of lives.
New Era established that the deceased were with four other staff members at the time the incident took place.
While the six members were divided in two groups of three individuals, the wild animal is reported to have charged after a group of three people and when Haseb could not keep up with the speed, she was trampled.
The elephant similarly killed Kasanga who attempted to run to Haseb’s rescue after he heard her screaming for help.
The incident took place in Mahango game park, which is reported to have thick bush, hence the individuals could not easily see the animal.
There is no white paper in the ministry that provides tips on how to behave when faced with a wild animal at close range.
However, experts in wildlife say a distance should be maintained between a person and a wild animal as the behaviour of animals cannot always be predicted.
While incidences involving staff members are rare, wild animal attacks almost became a trend last year when eight people were killed by crocodiles and hippos in the Caprivi and Kavango regions.
In October 2006, communities in the two regions lost six lives to crocodiles and two to hippos in the Chobe, Zambezi and Kavango rivers. Concerned with this spate of killings, Environment and Tourism Minister Konjore cautioned communities against taking risks against wild animals.
All the crocodile attacks were on children who were swimming in the rivers, while the two who lost their lives to crocodiles were fishing.
“This situation is worrisome and raises many concerns,” said Konjore, who also urged parents and community leaders living along the rivers in the northeast regions to warn their children swimming or bathing in the rivers that it was dangerous to do so as they could easily be caught and killed by crocodiles.
The ministry has been inundated with requests for compensation from the pu-blic for damages caused by wildlife to human lives, but the ministry does not have a policy to compensate for losses caused by wildlife.
The ministry is however developing a policy to deal with Human Wildlife Conflict Management that will cover areas of devolution of human wildlife conflict management authorities, community-based natural resource management, self-insurance schemes, alternative mitigation measures and a standardised monitoring scheme.

A Juneau doctor helped save a friend from an attacking leopard but shot him in the calf during a hunt gone sour last week in Zimbabwe.

Bill Adair, owner of Bullwinkle's Pizza Parlor, remained hospitalized Tuesday in Johannesburg, South Africa, and is recovering from a gunshot wound that damaged at least a tendon in his upper calf, said Emmett Marlow, manager of the restaurant.
Adair is expected to be flown to a Seattle hospital today for further treatment, Marlow said.
Adair and his friend, Dr. David Miller, had been hunting for leopard in Zimbabwe when one of the cats pounced on their guide.
"The leopard circled back on them and attacked the guide," Marlow said Adair told him over satellite phone. Adair then went to help the guide and the leopard turned on him.
"He started screaming at Dr. Miller to shoot it," Marlow said.
Miller aimed and hit the leopard, but the bullet from the high-powered rifle passed through the cat and struck Adair in the calf.
The guide, whose arm was injured, also tried to shoot the leopard, Marlow said. Eventually the cat was killed.
Miller, a surgeon, treated Adair's wound in the field before he was transported to a hospital. The incident occurred either May 21 or 22.
Marlow said he last spoke with Adair early Tuesday, mostly about business.
"He sounded pretty good. They sent some pictures up to our bookkeeper," he said. "I didn't know leopards got that big."
Leopards are known to be the most elusive of the big cats and, unlike species such as lions, are solitary creatures. They vary in size from 60 to 150 pounds, with males being larger.

(33) Leopard Mauls PH
It has been a rather difficult year for Andy Hunter of Chipitani Safaris in Zimbabwe.
Andy's long time tracker Mendas was killed by an Elephant last month in a field by his home.
I just talked to Andy, and he was severly mauled by a Leopard during a follow up in Chewore North.
Andy indicated that he and Ian Gibson were going into the Long Grass to find the clients wounded Leopard, and it attacked Andy. The Leopard did quite a job on his right arm with its teeth and claws and Andy was rushed to the Hospital for repairs. Andy said Ian saved him by shooting the Leopard off of him.
Andy was also upset that the leopard broke the stock on his brand new .416!
I hunted with Andy and Mendas last September in Chewore North. Andy is in the picture below and Mendas has a green cap on his knee.

South African professional hunter Christo Kaiser has been killed by an elephant in Botswana.
Kaiser, 40, the owner of Unico Hunting Safaris in Lephalale (formerly Ellisras), died on Friday, a close friend of his, Phillip Bronkhorst, said on Saturday. "He was killed in the northern part of Botswana on Friday morning. He was killed by an elephant," said Bronkhorst. He said no details of the incident were known, but nobody else was injured.
Kaiser had been accompanying four Spanish hunters who wanted to shoot elephant. His body would remain in Maun, Botswana, until a post mortem had been carried out. Bronkhorst said the rest of the group was on its way back to South Africa.

A CHARGING elephant on Sunday trampled a 48-year-old Mushumbi Pools man to death while his wife, son and other villagers watched helplessly.
Mendas Muzerengeni was killed at around 8pm when he had gone out to scare the animals from his field.
Mashonaland Central police spokesman Inspector Michael Munyikwa confirmed the incident saying the man was in the company of his son Taxi (17) when the incident occurred.
Insp Munyikwa said the two positioned themselves at different spots and began making noise in a bid to scare away the elephants.
One of the jumbos got irritated and charged towards Muzerengeni.
It gored Muzerengeni with its tusks and carried him for about 300 metres.
The man’s wife Ms Fenisia Mhako and other villagers, who had rushed to the scene after hearing Muzerengeni’s screams, watched helplessly from a distance. — HR.

Harare - A rogue buffalo killed three people in Zimbabwe's wildlife-rich Zambezi Valley, including a husband and wife working in their fields, a newspaper reported on Monday.
Thirty-three-year-old Adam Wesile was killed as he tried to rescue his wife Felistas from the buffalo in their cotton field in Mushumbi, northern Zimbabwe, said the Herald.
"When they saw (the buffalo), the couple believed it was a cow resulting in the woman advancing towards it, intending to drive the beast away," the paper reported police spokesman Michael Munyikwa as saying.
It was, however, too late for the woman to run away when she realised it was a buffalo, the paper said.
She was killed on the spot, and her husband was injured as he tried to rescue her. He died after being admitted to the nearby Guruve hospital, the paper said.
Another 25-year-old man identified only as Chimanga was killed by the buffalo on the same day while collecting firewood, the Herald said. It did not specify when the attacks took place.
The buffalo is still on the loose and police have warned villagers in the area to be careful. Game rangers are trying to hunt down the animal, the paper said.
There are regular cases of people being killed by wild animals here, especially elephants, crocodiles and buffaloes.

Maputo - Wild animals killed more than 30 people in Mozambique's central Manica province last year, Vista news reports.
Dinis Lissave, Manica provincial director for Agriculture, told the Maputo newspaper Noticias that attacks by elephants, crocodiles, snakes and hippo had caused 37 deaths, all of them subsistence farmers.
Lissave said there were more such fatalities last year than in previous years. He attributed this to an increased presence of people living close to game parks

An aggressive bull buffalo killed a man and hampered the retrieval of his body on a farm near Bethlehem on Wednesday, Free State police said.
Sergeant Mmako Mophiring said on Thursday that Sam Shongwe, 26, was returning from a pit latrine to a fenced area with two homes when the buffalo attacked at about 10:00.
Shongwe's older brother saw the buffalo toss Shongwe into the air, piercing both legs and slicing open one thigh to the genitals.
Shongwe's older sister, returning from fetching water, saw him lying helplessly. Wanting to pull him into the yard, she threw a stone to try to scare off the buffalo.
But the buffalo turned towards her and she ran away and hid in her house within the enclosure.
The police were only informed of the attack at 17:30 when people arrived home with a cell phone.
On arrival at 17:45, the police climbed over a stile, as the main gate to the farm was locked.
Five buffalo were near the yard, with the bull close to the fence, Mophiring said.
The bull approached police when they tried to retrieve the body, so the people within the enclosure lit a huge fire to scare it off.
After they managed to get the body into the enclosure, police fired a few shots to scare off the buffalo, before carrying the body to the stile.
The officers ran with the body, burning grass torches, and carried it over the stile to a waiting mortuary van.
Mophiring said the farmer could not be contacted as his cell phone had been switched off.
A resident told police that a buffalo had attacked a man in his house in march, outside the fenced homesteads enclosure, while he was sleeping.
Police have opened an inquest and a charge under the Animal Protection Act against the farmer for failing to prevent animals from attacking people.
