Caribou hunting a joke
I was watching this show on the Outdoor channel. These guy were from the backland outdoors and they were shooting these Caribou like ducks in a pond. If you ask me these guys arent hunters. They are SLAUGHTERS!!! I felt sorry for these animals. They were driving down a road going threw the tundra and drove right up to a Caribou that was just off the road maybe 50-75 yards. They had a handy caped hunter with them. They get the guy out of the truck get him set up in his chair and wheel him towards the animal. Not one time did the animal raise his head and look in there direction. The guy shoots the animal and doesn't even look as if he was excited. While they are congradulating him another Caribou walks past the truck 50 yards behind them. They hurrie up and wheel him to the back of the truck and hand him his gun. He shoots his second Caribou. Two animals down in less than 5 minutes. In the WIDE OPEN!!! I dont care what anybody says. THIS IS NOT HUNTING!!!! I'm sure there are places in the US were you can hunt deer and turkeys the same way. I'm glade I hunt pressured public land. At least I know when I harvest a deer or a turkey I did something these guys CAN'T DO HUNT!!!!!!

RE: Caribou hunting a joke
Jeeez, a guy in a wheel chair can't even get a break around here!! How far would you like to see him have to be "wheeled" before getting a shot at game? There are states that allow the "handicapped" to shoot from the window of a vehicle! I suppose if you were in a wheel chair, you'd work out enough to "wheel" way out in the bush to hunt, huh?
Jeez, give the guys a break! They had some luck come thier way, and they took advantage of it for a less than fortunate hunter! Nothing wrong with being lucky every now and then, even for the handicapped!! With caribou, it's either feast or famen! Nothing wrong with "feasting" when the opportunity comes!! |

RE: Caribou hunting a joke
I have hunted with handicap hunters, and they have very hard hunts. They might be allowed to shoot from a vehicle, or hunt early in the season, but their hunts are not easy. Just having the guts to continue hunting against many odds makes them pretty remarkable to me. Sounds like this handicap hunter was given a gift, and he accepted it. My hat is off to him, and the guys that helped him on his hunt. Good luck.

RE: Caribou hunting a joke
Caribou seem to be different critters depending on the area you hunt. If you hunt the Mulchatna herd in Alaska, the animals are very pressured. Other herds like the Western Arctic are not hunted all that hard, and are not all that wary.
The amazing thing about caribou hunting is the hunt itself. You have never known such a humbling feeling when the airplane drops you off and you know that you MUST take completley care of yourself for the next ten days. Nights are crisps and cold (zero degrees is not uncommon) and the Northern Lights can put on quite a show. The days are usually mild or wet, and the hunting is not all that hard, but the staying alive part is really hard. Add to that the packing of a couple of miles of pieces of caribou after the kill all on your back, and then the grizzlys wanting to claim your prize. Caribou hunting is absolutely amazing! |

Mr. Long beard- I hunted with Safari Nordik for 6 days seen 11 caribou total was lucky to bag 2 real nice bulls walked 8 to 12 miles a day. Caribou hunting isn't a joke. If a handicap hunter can drive up to a herd and score it's great. I'am glad there out hunting.

ORIGINAL: Mr. Longbeard They are SLAUGHTERS!!! ... They had a handy caped hunter with them. Now I'm asking myself, what exactly is a "handy caped SLAUGHTER"? Is it a buck that's already caped out when you shoot it? Some sort of genetic deformity? Or, is it the hunter who's been caped out already? I just don't get it. |

Longbeard:
Get off your high horse. "I'm glade I hunt pressured public land" Well I'm glad that your happy with what you've got, nobody else wants it. "At least I know when I harvest a deer or a turkey I did something these guys CAN'T DO HUNT!!!!!!" Now I get it, your one of those guys who hunt on public land and think that just because your hunting sucks that anybody else that has to work less then you do in tagging a buck, is not a "true hunter". People like you crack me up. I'm sure that your the type that thinks that people who hunt on private land are not hunters either, and that your a "better hunter" then them because you have to work hard to kill a deer. Hunters like you who think your more "elite" are nothing more then a joke............. |

If you ask me these guys arent hunters. They are SLAUGHTERS (DID YOU MEAN SLAUGHTERERS?)!!! I felt sorry for these animals. They were driving down a road going threw (THROUGH) the tundra and drove right up to a Caribou that was just off the road maybe 50-75 yards. They had a handy caped (HANDICAPPED) hunter with them. They get the guy out of the truck get him set up in his chair and wheel him towards the animal. Not one time did the animal raise his head and look in there direction. Get a clue; and while you are at it get a dictionary so your next il-conceived,vitriolic post will not look like it was written by an angry sixth grader. |
RE: Caribou hunting a joke
I don't have a prob with a handicaped:) hunter having it a little easy. But this was a joke!!! The guy didn't even look like he was happy about it. I'm sure he new it was a joke also... I've seen shows were the Caribou hunting looked a little harder. They were useing bows;) I'm sure these animals didn't see people much that was obvious[:o] Hunting those animals would be no different than me driving down to my local farm field pulling over and unloading on a bunch of cows. I'm sure I could justfy the hunt buy telling every body how heavy the quarters were that I had to carry back to my truck
Hey if your hunt unpressred game and have a wall full of trophys. Who am I to say you didn't earn them;) Me I like hunting animals that at age 18 months are more weary than your 4,5 and 6 yeard old animals Good luck guys on your future hunts but I'm sure were you hunt theres no such thing as luck it's all skill right;) |
