Alaska Blackie

Just got back from black bear hunting in Southcentral Alaska and bagged a decent one, about 6'2". What was cool was he had a big melon and huge paws. Although small ears can be an indication of a large bear this guy had sonar ears attached to him.

I am going to rug him, $850 (Ouch) but they want to charge me an extra $150 for the skull. I figure I can do this myself but need advice. The taxidermist is going to seal and give the skull back by the end of the week. So what do I need to do? Boil obviously but I hear some people say not to use bleach?

Any thoughts or recommendations? I would like a step-by-step instruction.

I want to attach a picture, but it says file too large. How do I shrink file size?

open the file in a photoshop or photo editor if you have it on your computer. Go to "resize" and then shrink the picture down to 290 pixels or smaller....

congrats by the way on a nice bear~!!! cant wait to see it

Congrads on your catch, huntingnet and other hunting web sights might have it. I found it on huntingnet but do not remember where, sorry.

Beautiful bear. What did he weigh?
Clean, Boil, bleach & peroxide...

Thanks for the link, looks like good instructions. I would like to use those beetles but they take awhile just to hatch, too long a process. I like the suggestion to mark on the skull, date of kill, size, hunter, etc. Which brings me to another question, what are the appropriate techniques to measure the skull?

By the way, I would guestimate he was about 325-350 pounds. He probably wasn't out of his den for more than 2-3 weeks and he already had some meat on him. I can't imagine what he would have looked like in the fall! His hide was perfect, jet black and no white spots.

Rugers7,

Nice bear. Did you shoot him north of Palmer?
