RE: Moose in Yellowstone Gone?
Nobody has said anything about bears taking out calves. A study was done here a number of years ago and they where surprized to find that in Ont. black bears are the #1 predator on calves. I lika da moose , wish there where more around[>:]:( |
RE: Moose in Yellowstone Gone?
There was a very comprehensive study done on Isle Royal many years ago on the moose/wolf relationship. Wolves that took on healthy adults whether it was a cow or bull did not make out so well. They tend to leave them alone if they stand there ground. A moose that turns and runs dies. This is an island and the moose population is quite healthy. Wolves and moose can have a natural relationship and both can exist together quite well.
I agree that blackbears have an impact on moose calves. Us hunters have been asking the goverment of Ont. to get their corrupt heads out of the sand and implement a study to examine this problem which has grown since they shutdown the spring bear hunt. Calf survival rate has dropped imensly lately according to hunter up here. Winter ticks is also a problem. So is brain worm which is prevelant when wolves, deer and moose all cohabitate together. They call it the blind staggers. I usually run into a few moose every-year that exhibit the staggers. These are the moose that seem to be extra stupid and stand around bewildered. Sooner or later the wolves will find them and they become diner. Moose |
RE: Moose in Yellowstone Gone?
I want to thank everyone who is responding. With balanced conversation I feel I'm learning what I was hoping to. It makes me feel pretty good to be a hunter amongst intelligent people. The gentleman over in Az. was convinced that the last moose in Yellowstone was gone. I will print this stuff and share with him even though most is not hard fact. I'm convinced that the moose situation will swing back into a more level headed approach. Hopefully before the moose population is reduced to what I perceive is to low. I eagerly await my moose hunt just South of Jackson this year(the anticipation is going to kill me.)
There was talk of Bear predation. I packed into the Wilderness near Pinedale Wy. a few years back. We had just cut loose the livestock to graze and were setting up camp. I looked out across the meadow and there was a Griz. It was great to see it. It came back across the edge of the meadow two more times about 125 yrds. away give or take. The second time it stood up and was checking us out. We came to the conclusion it was going back and forth looking for elk calves as it was that time of year. I had previously heard from someone I worked with that he witnessed a griz doing this and had been fortunate enough to find a calf in the grass. Anyways, we got lucky since our animals never saw or smelled this bear. It made sleeping that night kind of interesting too. |
