Default Anyone ever Caribou hunt in Alaska

I have always wanted to make a nice Caribou type hunt with my wife. I am looking for a good outfitter to use or if someone has a do it yourself type guide for me.

I am not looking to kill a record book buck but if one comes along, that would be nice.....LOL

Just looking to go set up a tent on a nice hill to overlook an area where Caribou come through and we can go after them there.

Also, What time of year are these hunts and what other type of hunting do they have at the same time. I heard there is a little wing shooting also, wouldn't mind that.

Also, tell me about the weather and insects.....thanks.

I've shot a lot of caribou in Alaska. There are several fly in services in Anchorage that will fly you and your gear into the bush, and pick you up at a later date. I'm sure if you take the time to do a bit of homework you can find a fly in service in Anchorage.

Getting a caribou will mostly depend on the weather, as once they start moveing you have to be in the right place, or you just won't see many. Mid september is probably the best time, and the weather could be from cold and snow to warm and bugs. Most septs are cold enough to freeze at night, and fairly warm and decent durning the day. Sept is one of my favorite months in Alaska!

Bugs will depend on the weather, if it freezes at night the bugs aren't so bad, if it stays warm then you will have bugs.

The bird hunting will be for ptaramigian, as they like to stay in the tundra where the caribou are, also you could see a black bear, or moose. Most places where there are caribou, there will also be a brown bear around. I've seen many brown bears and fresh tracks in caribou area's.

Personally, i think it's on the hard side to get both a moose, and a caribou on a short hunt with out moveing your camp. I think it's more likely you'd see a blk bear while hunting caribou, at least that's the way it always was when i hunted caribou a lot there. I've shot most of my caribou SW of Anchorage, and if you go north instead, all of this info will be different.

I have a friend who lives in Alaska. He used to work at ERA aviation several years ago and he coordinated a drop hunt for him, a buddy of mine and myself. The main intent was to hunt moose, although we also had caribou tags. As we flew in, the pilot and our buddy made out that we were going to attempt getting into a lake that was in an area that had very little hunting pressure all season. As we approached the lake we were to drop into, it was extremely windy and there was no way we could set down without risking a major accident. As we were circling, we saw two different bulls, one which was "WELL" into the 60" range and the other high 50" but maybe 60". Talk about pumped, then to find out that we couldn't set down....errgghhh!!! Anyway, what we had to do is settle for another lake to set down into and this one was in the transition area of mountains/tundra. I passed a small bull moose the first day and saw some calfs and cows later, but nothing else for moose. We did have an occasional caribou pass through, but nothing big at all, and I already had two double shovels on my wall at home from a previous Quebec hunt.

Anyway, we flew in with "Illiamna Air Taxi" and we were on our own for the week. What an awesome, fun trip. Didn't tag an animal, but if we really wanted to be dropped for caribou exclusively, we could have taken animals for sure.

Unbelievable Aurora Borealis at night, wildlife up the wazoo, and we did see several grizzlies, which was the high point for me. One day, I had a huge grizz with very long golden hair working some berry bushes in from of me and he started up the ridge I was on and got to about 75 yards, when I decided that was close enough and loaded up my pack and slid out and over the top of the ridge. Speaking of blue berries, every day we would fill our water bottles up at the end of the day with berries and had blue berry panckaces for breakfast....Mmmmmmmm :-)

Anyway, a bit long winded, but a trip like this can be one of the most enjoyable. But be prepared, because when that plane flys off and there you stand looking at each other in the wilderness of Alaska, it pretty much hits you with a dose of reality, but was an awesome dose!!!!
