Guided elk hunt help
 

Looking to do a guided elk hunt this year,would like to keep costs to about $5000.00 and hunt 300 to 320 class elk any recomondations to outfitters and states?help please

5K will get you in to lots of elk camps. You might watch the Outdoor Channel for the elk hunts they show, most are with guides. You might also look on this site as they advertise for many outfitters. One outfitter which gets lots of press (both good and bad) is USO Outfitters. I wouldn't use them, but lots of people do.

I have a supplier that I work with that went on a guided hunt last fall. I believe he went to Montana and packed in on horses. He saw a few nice bulls, including two bulls sparring. He ended up getting a 5 X 6 bull I think. He said he had a great time and would like to go back. I saw some pictures and they were hunting in a little snow and staying in wall tents. We have a sportsman show coming up the 1st week in February and I am going to get the name of the outfitter/guide. He also got a mule deer tag and shot a 3 x 4 muley from the ranch the day before leaving on horseback to hunt elk.
I think he said the cost was around $3,500. This was a rifle hunt.

I hunted pronghorn with this outfitter and plan to go back if I can draw a tag,he'll give you 110%...;)

Check the Eastman's Hunting Journal website. Mike Eastman knows his stuff when it comes to western hunting. I would think that 5K should get you a pretty good hunt. Good luck!

You can hunt alot of places for $5000. But if your after 300 to 320 and up bull, then your gonna have to really research your outfitter. No matter what the hunting videos are telling you most of the outfitters nm or anywhere else won't get you a 320 or better bull. Alot of them advertise these elk but very few actually get them. Probaly 2 to 3 big bulls a year out of how many hunters. You are better off applying for a trophy unit in the state you want to hunt. I'll be honest we get 1or 2 big bulls a year but we hunt wilderness and that's in a open unit where the public can buy over the counter tags. You best bet is a outfitter in a trophy draw unit. I discourage highfenced hunting and baited elk that is just not hunting. Call the forest service and ask about the outfitter if they have permits on forest service land. That will save you from a bad hunt. Good luck to you and hope you get one.

If you are willing to spend a little more, I am aware of an outfitter who offers elk "management" hunts on a 200,000+ acre ranch where you will most certainly meet your goals. As I recall, the hunts are in the $6,000 range. Management elk are generally 5X5 or 5X6 bulls that are more than 6 years in age. The only problem with this hunt is you will not be permitted to shoot the many larger non-management bulls. When I went on this hunt several years ago, I glassed 30+ trophy bulls before taking a management bull that scored 309. The first evening, I was on a larger 5X6 (340+) but only had a straight on shot that I declined to take. I would guess I saw 100+ bulls in the day and a half. It is my view that this is a great opportunity to take a mature bull without spending the $ a trophy elk costs. This is not a high fence operation--you must be in reasonable shap and able to hike down into the holes the elk are found.
