300 Win Mag or 350 Rem Mag for Elk?

Have booked first elk hunt in Colorado. Own BAR 300 Win Mag with BOSS and REM 673 350 Rem Mag. Which one should I take? Guide says shots are from 50 to 300 yards. HELP

Flip a coin. You have more than enough gun with either of them. At 300 yards they are only going to be about 2+- inches different in trajectory.

If you are really worried about it the 300 mag will retain more energy at farther distances than the 350 will but the 350 will be a faster a handling rifle if you happen to find yourself in deep timber. Either are perfectly suitable for the yardage you described though.

I would be plenty happy with either one.

Hi siyeh,

I own and like my 673 chambered in .350 Remington Magnum very much. I would be perfectly willing to take it elk hunting for the conditions you described. But I'd also be the first to admit that the .300 Winchester Magnum with either a good 180 or 200 grain, (preferably premium), bullet would make a heck of an elk rifle for those same conditions.

Take the one that you shoot the best....and have the most confidence with! (If it is possible take the other as a spare....you can always switch if you feel the need to.) But my first choice....would be the one that I shoot best and am most comfortable with!

Rest assured.....they are both very good elk cartridges, and rifles!

Best of luck!

The .300 should be fine, but a little more knock-down power can be nice...

I would take the .300 Win. Mag. as my primary rifle, and the 350 Rem. Mag. as a back up. Good luck.

I hunt elk with my 300-win mag. I would also elk hunt with a 350-Remington if I owned one. I would say flip a coin & good luck hunting.

I wouldn't use my M600 in 350 Mag for a 300 yard Elk shot but if I had a 673 I wouldn't hesitate. However, the edge would have to go to the 300 mag at beyond 300 yards.

Tough decision but I would take whichever rifle I shot the best and if that was the 673 I would take it, but using Remington's factory ammo may be a problem though. At present they only load a 200 grain pill for the 350, but I heard a rumour they will be soon offering a 225 gr Swift A-Frame. If you handload I would load up a 225 grain Partition or A-Frame and take the 350...

You can compare ballistics here.....
