Something Different: Tahr
Here' s a photo of a Bull Tahr I harvested back in September.
He weighs about 200-250 pounds and his horns go about 11 1/2 inchs. Tahr live in similar terrain to Rocky Mountain Goats. They originally come from the Himalayan Mountains in Nepal, but there are small populations in various other parts of the world. They are a big tough animal with acute senses, they inhabit rocky outcrops in steep mountainous terrain. You need to be fit to hunt them. Mostly shots are taken in the 250-400 yard range, although with careful stalking you can get closer. The ideal rifle/calibre is 7mm Magnum. Taking them with a bow is a great challenge. Best time to hunt them is during their rut (May/June) which is in early winter. At this time the Big Bulls are less wary and hang about with the females (Nannys) making them more visable. Their coats are also in their prime at this stage. As you can see in the picture, the Bull has a large shaggy mane. When a bull skylines on a rocky ridge, with his mane blowing in the wind, it is an awesome and unforgettable sight. The meat is excellent eating. A trophy bull is a very sought after item in this part of the world |

The New Zealand countryside and mountains are indeed beautiful. And we got to see a whole bunch of it, too. ;)
Since you guys enjoyed those photos, here's a couple more. -TONY This is a feral Arapawa ram. Photo taken at the lodge of chamois shot the previous day; darkness and rain prevented "in the field" photos. |
