Barbary Sheep New Mexico (Aoudad)

Got lucky and drew a Unit 29,30 Barbary sheep tag. Really did not expect to draw as a non-resident so just starting the research. Luckily it isn't till Feb. Anyone have any experience in that area?

I don't even know what that is!

But I'm excited to read about it next February. Keep us updated on the trip

What can you tell us about the application process?

Just apply through the New Mexico game and fish website. The downsides are you must front the money for the tags when you apply. If not drawn you will be refunded minus the small app fee. Its pretty tough to get drawn for a non-resident as well unless you go with an outfitter. New Mexico allots 84% of the tags to residents, 10% to guides and outfitters and 6% to non-Residents not using an outfitter. They also have it set that there has to be a certain amount of tags available to even allow non-residents to apply.

Thank ya. I'll probably need it. Folks don't seem to want to help with info on the sheep hunts and I'm too cheap to pay for the prices the guides want these days. ha

The good thing about limited tags is limited pressure.

Find a big block of public land that holds sheep, take a week off, and have good boots and good glass and you should be able to find an opportunity!

Thats what is awesome about those 2 units. Together they are just over 4000 square miles and about 80% public. My biggest worry is leaving my truck in the parking areas being that close to Mexico. Ha. It should be a good time whether I tag out or not. Some beautiful country down there

This is great!
Will you be using a rifle? Or going for an Archery kill?
Best of Success!!

I will probably take both. Would love to tag one with the bow but not really sure what to expect up there so the 7mag or 6.5 will be coming with me. Still haven't found much info on where to start looking. Everyone is tight lipped even though the tags are limited.
