Default Black Death - Buffalo Bites Back

Black death, and we are not referring to the tarpon fly that is used for fishing for overcast days or darker waters. We are also not referring to the African Black Mamba.

We refer to the most dangerous Big 5 Animal to hunt on foot: The Cape Buffalo.

Cape buffalos are extremely dangerous to both humans and other animals. Cape buffalos are estimated to be responsible for killing over 200 people per year. When a Cape buffalo is charging towards you, it is determined to kill you. Poor shot placement will make it almost impossible to stop.

In 2018, a South African hunter who had shot a wild buffalo was himself killed by another member of the herd, a reports state. Mr Claude Kleynhans, 54, was attacked by a large male buffalo as he was loading a carcass onto a vehicle in Limpopo province, north east South Africa. The buffalo tore the father-of-three's femoral artery and he died at the scene, Citizen.co.za reports. Mr Kleynhans run a company called Guwela Safari.

Another incident according to a report of The SUN is that in 2022, October the 7th. 64 years of age, Mr Mario Alberto Canales Najjar, who was also the president of Mexico’s Hunting Federation, saw the buffalo while hunting in Costa Uruguay Sur, Argentina. According to reports the buffalo was shot with a .458 Winchester Magnum. However, the hunting group still didn’t see it drop dead. The enraged and vicious buffalo charged toward the late Mr Najjar in a ferocious attack. Even after the guide fired shots, they could not save him from the charging wild animal.

The buffalo only fall victim after being shot five times. The hunting group loaded Mr Najjar into a car and drove him to the hospital nearest them. Unfortunately, he passed away before he could be admitted to the hospital.

It as advisable to ensure that your medical aid is covering hunting accidents. You can compare different options on Medicalaid.com for hunting the Cape buffalo in Southern AfricaIts is advisablefor overseas clients to take out cover to have an option to go to private hospitals. In Africa the public hospitals can sometimes be that final nail between life and death treatment.

Reasons why the Buffalo is the Most Dangerous of the Big Five

Do not be misled by Buffalos hardly looking like killers. They are fearless animals and when in a group they are warriors. It is known that it is the most dangerous game to hunt on walk and stalk method. A buffalo never forgets, and it will find you especially if it is wounded. It becomes very aggressive, angry and they will turn the tables on you. They would seek revenge on the hunter if it were only wounded. Instead of fleeing they will counterattack by charging towards you.

Buffalo is unpredictable.

It gives no notice of attack compare to lion that might give a warning or an elephant mock charges, flays its ears and makes a noise. With a buffalo, they present themselves as calmly and then suddenly charging, eyes locked into their enemy and trampling everything that is in their way. There is simply no indication or behavioural changes before a buffalo is triggered to charge.

Cape Buffalos are Beasts of 425kg -870kg and can charge at speeds of up to 50 km.

The Cape buffalo charges at an average 50 km per hour. They will target you and charge immediately once they’ve locked their eyes upon you. As the buffalo is in reach of you they will drop his head and you will be mauled to death by its horns and power.

Dagga Boys.

Dagga boys are old bulls that have been ousted from the herd and no longer form part of the herd. They tend to leave from their herds and form tight bachelor groups with other dagga boys. The are much more grumpy and aggressive. They indulge in mud holes and exercising their dominance. Almost like old men at the local pub. Dagga is a term that means “mud”, which is pretty much where you will find the old bulls. Dagga boys are massive in size and stature, and normally have a deeply etched horns. In a fight or flight moment they choose FIGHT! The dagga boy is the trophy animal for the hunter. It is advisable to make use of a Professional Hunters with traceable references for Buffalo hunts.

And on a last personal note: Make sure your life insurance is in place before you go on the walk and stalk of this ultimate hunting experience.
