Different Kind of Day
 

I was hunting a place by Shamrock TX this morning. Before shooting light I have about 12 whitetails out in a wheat field and my intention was to take a fat doe. Before legal shooting time all of the deer looked to the south and took off running. I wasn't sure what spooked them since I was really quiet and the wind was good. About 30 seconds after they ran off a big group of hogs came out. The guy that owns the property has been talking about the hogs tearing up his winter wheat so I decided to help him out.


Dropped the biggest sow in the bunch with a single Barnes 130 gr TTSX from my 308 Win. Bullet hit her at the base of the ear at about 170 yards. This was a really big pig and went a little over 300 lbs on a scale. One less rooter to tear up the field. But I still need a burger doe so I'll have to try again next weekend. Not a big hurry since I can hunt does on this property until mid-Feb.

Are the big ones like that any good to eat ? A guy on another site from TX shoots a bunch of hogs. He drags the big ones near the wood line and leaves them there for the yotes, foxes and vultures to take care of them .He says they are awful. Tastes like one big pile of stinky fat . They keep the ones that are under 200 lbs but prefer the ones between 100 to 150 lbs. I figured it might be just him being picky

This one was crawling with ticks and lice so we didn't even bother with it. Just rigged a tow rope to it and drug it off the wheat field after weighing it on a bumper hoist. But most the guys here that are seriously into pig hunting won't eat one over 120 lbs. As to myself, I don't really target them and wouldn't have shot this one if the owner hadn't talked about them rooting up his field. I took that as a hint to shoot one if I saw them. He has 6000 acres he lets me hunt does on so I'm willing to take that hint to keep in his good graces.

They sure are nasty looking critters. I am glad we don't have them here. I guess they can be pretty destructive.

I bet the property owner is happy.
