Applied for a controlled moose tag
So, as the title says, I got in my Idaho controlled moose tag application today. In case anyone’s wondering, the spring black bear hunt is not going to work out. I learned I may be moving soon. So, instead, I applied for a moose tag in North Idaho, specifically hunting unit 3.
Here’s hoping I draw a tag. I have a friend who said he’s going to take me on a moose hunt if I draw a tag. He has experience with it. In fact, he got his moose already a few years ago. I will keep you all up to date on if I draw a tag or not. I should get the results in June. Jared |
Good luck.

and some great eating if you kill one! |
Best of luck on drawing the tag.

You're gonna want something a little heavier than a .243 probably.
Maybe even required by law. Moose could be hunt with a .243, but I'd want to go heavier. -Jake |

Best of luck drawing a tag. I hunted a moose up here in 2019 on my sister’s permit. The hunt was a quick one with only going into the hunt for 15 minutes on opening day. But spent sometime locating it. Not trying to be a wise guy or anything. But you want to get a lot of practice shooting that rifle before you hunt. I know in my case with my sister I should of gotten more used to the rifle before the hunt. I had to track ours a quite of a ways after it was hit twice by the 30-06. I feel if I had been more used to it I could of gotten it quicker. The first shot dropped it in it’s tracks. The second shot I was roughly 10 feet from him when he had gotten up. That took right in the nose and turned him away from me. I missed on the next shot which lead to tracking him. Anyway good luck again on drawing a tag!

A mature Shiras bull moose is slightly smaller than the Eastern moose and my friend and I used our old trusty 30-06s without any problem on those. They can be taken with less potent cartridges but IMO I would rate the '06 as minimum. I'm sure there will be some that disagree. But whatever you choose you need a good stout bullet to penetrate deep into the vitals and/or smash some bone.

I did not draw a moose tag.
Oh well. |
