DIY Elk hunt
Well I finally got talked into putting down the duck calls for one trip and picking up the bow for a OTC elk hunt. Figured I might as well go when I’m young enough to still get off the beaten path 8-10 miles and chase them. Going with a group of 4 guys and was wondering a couple things on equipment. I’m looking at a mystery ranch terraframe 80L for a pack. Should be able to get 4-5 days of supplies and food in it to pack in. Anybody have any experience with this pack? I know it’s on the heavier side but at 6’7” 250lbs I am not as worried about a 3lb increase for the space and savings of the pack. Plus MR makes a great product from what I can gather.
Second does anyone know of a GPS unit that can link with other units so we can see real time locations of the other members in our group? This seems like a pretty obvious capability that somebody should have but the endless options of GPS units are overwhelming to say the least. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! |
I believe the Garmin Rhino has that capability. Maybe others as well.

I really like my EXO mountain gear pack, I've used it to pack out 2 deer and a bear, no elk yet.
Check out the Garmin Inreach it is a satellite communication device that you can use to message you buddy in the backcountry, depending on the model you can use it as a stand alone GPS or link it via bluetooth with your phone. Each message you send will include your location. As a note it requires a monthly subscription to use the messaging features though. |
