As some may recall that I had mentioned earlier that my sister had gotten a moose permit. I am her sub and she is hoping that I will get one for her. Well on the 14th of this month we will be giving it a great try. I have been scouting hard and I have found around 4 different groups of them. No big cuttings like they did years ago. I have seen two different bulls in one area. They are with the cows now though. That alone is going to make for a tough hunt. Also I was talking with the local game warden here and he stated the zone we will be hunting is the hardest zone to hunt in. The success rate is low for it. I told him that I wasn’t sure why it was because the moose are there. Anyhow I am thinking on scenting the area where I have seen those bulls in next Sunday afternoon. Then go in using just cow calls. What do you all think? Do you think this will help me get them away from those cows? Anyway any ideas would be consider.

Absolutely Cal! She is super excited as she has never been on one before. I am hoping that we can get one out. I know this is going to be a big game of waiting and being patient for one to show up. But it will still be a hunt of a lifetime..

Best of Luck! What about challenging the bulls with grunts and raking?

That works great during the September hunt. But once they are with the cows it becomes a different game. But it is still possible to catch one wandering that may come in. But your chances are slim as they already have established their territory. They become just like an old Tom turkey and start looking for loving instead of fighting. I did take the plunge and bought a cocall. It’s an electronic call and it came with a cow SD card. So I am hoping it will pull one away. I have a hard time now a days trying to mimic a moose threw a birch bark horn because of the after affects of cancer on my voice. I do have a couple of grunt tubes though. One of them is a cow grunt and I am experiencing a hard time using it. The bull grunt is no problem at all. I called this one out using the bull grunt a week ago. But now they are with the cows and it’s a different hunt.

<div style="text-align:left;">I went out scouting today and checked out a new area in case we need it. I am glad that I did. I talked with some woodcutters and they told me where they have been seeing a few when driving in and out of work. One area that they are cutting in has a massive bull hanging around it. They said that we should be hunting it. I informed them that I can’t with the cutting activities going on in there. They told me to anyway and besides they will not be in there come next week as they are finishing up right now. So it sounds good anyway. Also this is going to be a hard hunt as the wood cutting practices have changed from years past. Also we are loosing our yearlings every spring because of ticks. This spring alone according to the local warden that just over twenty yearlings were investigated after dying from them. Also he told me that the zone we have is one of the harder ones to hunt in. The lowest success rate is from there. But I am still confident as I have seen a couple of them and hopefully next week will be able to get one of them. Yes absolutely Big Uncle and then I can shoot it for her. She will split the moose with me for doing all the work and scouting etc. I was out last Friday scouting and saw what I thought was a cow and two calves. After getting a few pictures of them I discovered that they most likely were yearlings. One had a small maybe six points on him. The other never showed it’s head to me so not sure about that one other than it being a yearling. My sister told me to shoot the first bull we see no matter what the size of it is. I also talked with another group of woodcutters. They stated that they saw five moose in where they are cutting right now. The boss wanted to take me in right then and there. I told him not until Monday before I can hunt and I can’t hunt an active cutting. He says you be right here Monday morning and if anyone says anything to come see me. So I now have another place to go hunting in as well that wasn’t hunted during the September hunt. So I am pumped up that we will be doing alright. So tomorrow morning we will be going after one! I can hardly wait to see if we can get it done. I did purchase a Cocall 2 to try out as well.Here is a picture from Friday morning.
