Back from my Newfie Moose Hunt. I did not fill my tag. My group of six filled 5 of 6 bull moose tags and 1 of 1 bear tags. Our hunt was Sept 24-28, 2018. We had a full moon the first part of the hunt and a 1/2 day of torrential down pours and high winds (I still hunted that morning though).

Camp was very comfortable with 4 bedrooms and 1 bathroom/shower. Guides and cook slept in separate building with several bedrooms and another bathroom/shower. Large living room dinning room area and kitchen. Wood stove for heat and generator running around the clock. Camp was located 8 miles off the Trans Canada Highway on a fairly rough road. Cook was very nice and meals were good. She is The outfitters sister.

My days consisted of getting up at 3:15am, having coffee/breakfast, grabbing my bagged lunch, and leaving camp by 4:30. Roger and I would drive 1 to 1.5 hours, then take the Argo in another 5km - 12km. Then start hiking. Most areas I hunted were very remote with no one else around. We would usually hunt until about 11 them move locations for the afternoon hunt.

I saw 35 moose for the week with about 75% being bulls. Of the bulls I saw only 3 were over 40” but too far to get to. They were just starting to come to calls. They were interested but not committed yet. I’m not sure if the weather and moon had an effect on them or if it was just a bit too early.

Roger Sheppard is the real deal. He seems to really know how to moose hunt and how to call. He would use an electronic bullhorn type cow call. He would grunt with his mouth and use a canoe paddle to display and rake trees and splash in water. He held a number of moose with this tactic while we looked them over.

I never took a shot as I wanted a 40”+ bull with paddles. I told him I wasn’t going to shoot a young bull and he tried his hardest to get one to come in. Plus I really wanted My daughter to take a bull first. There was a decent 3 year old 9pt with paddles that came in to calls on day 2. Hind sight I should have shot him. I would go back again and hunt with Roger with no hesitation.

All in all a fun week of hunting. My daughters bull was a 2.5 year old and in the 650lb range. Her bear was a 125lb boar. The biggest bull we took was a 39” 12pt my buddy took.

Yes he gets a limited number of caribou tags per year. Woodland caribou hunts are pricey these days compared to the early 2000s when Champlain Islander and I use to go. Back then it was a $2,200 hunt. Now it’s a $7,500 hunt. The moose hunt I went on was $4,400 which included the $500 tag and all taxes, meals, and infield transportation.

These are her last two Colorado Mulies, 191” and 173”.

I’m resurrecting this thread. I had such a great time last year (even though I didn’t fill my tag) that I am headed back this fall. I decided to try late season as the moose are starting to yard up and bigger bulls are taken with groups of bulls seen. I am going the week of Nov 4th. Time will tell how I do, but I’m sure I will have fun.
