New Muzzleloader guy going for Elk
So I am super new to hunting period.
My family has talked me into muzzleloader this year for elk in Colorado. I'm picking up the CVA Wolf PR2110. However I am lost when it comes to Ammo. We cannot use sabots. I am looking for something that will shot straight and i can zero prior to season. Any recommendations? |
I found Hornady's Great Plains 385 gr. and their FPB 350 gr. bullets shoot very well in my Knight. At the time, I recall, I had to snip the nose off the FPB to make them CO. compliant.

while some people will think your old fashion or just not putting much thought into it,
a properly patched & lubed round ball has and will continue to be an accurate and useful projectile. and Id suggest you try it just to check the rifles accuracy and consistency, with that option. on my 62 cal hawken its shoots about a 2" hundred yard group off a bench rest, all the other options , I've tried, are closer to 4"-5" groups , probably due to the less popular bore diam. and slower 1/42 twist rate. and yes its devastating on the deer Ive shot, so its not likely to be an issue with elk. as always shot placement and a knowledge of the games anatomy and your judgement is critical. http://garage.grumpysperformance.com...nsistant.4638/ |
Patched Round Ball accuracy will be very marginal in a 1-28 twist with a hunting power load.
The solution is simple. Check out the Thor copper conicals at muzzle-loaders.com or the Federal 350gr lead B.O.R. conicals. Neither one is cheap but they are designed to hold together with heavy loads. https://www.muzzle-loaders.com/bulle...nufacturer=232 https://www.muzzle-loaders.com/bulle...nufacturer=199 A cheaper solution is either NoExcuses or BullShop conicals. A 420-460grain soft lead conical with a somewhat mild load of powder (70-90gr) is a devastating combination. If you go with soft lead its also a good idea to get some wool felt wads to protect the base of the bullet. https://www.muzzleloading-bullets.com/shop/ https://bullshop.weebly.com/blackpowder.html |
I shoot a CVA Wolf and use 110 gr. of BlackHorn 209 with a 250 gr. Barnes T-EZ bullet. The Barnes has never failed me yet, which I cannot say for the Power Belts I was originally using though I did kill quite a few with them. If using BH209, I recommend purchasing the BH209 breech plug highly. As far as bullet though. that Barnes is really impressive and the combo gives me spectacular one inch groups and 100yds. They are not cheap but our BP season is right in the rut and want great performance when shooting big bucks. Love my Wolf and have killed deer and bear with it.

I just re-read your Post and see that you cannot use sabots. Sorry about that as my suggestion will not work for you.

What Gm54-120 said, I would only add that Hornady also makes a conical called the FPB in both 350 and 300 grains. Some get very good accuracy with these. You could also ask this question on the muzzleloader section of this forum for more advice.
