Blast from the Past

I was looking through old photos and found this one. It shows me and my father on a friend of mine's place in South Africa. We had just came in from more than a week in the bush and this is outside the skinning shed. Laid out in front of us is a weeks worth of safari. Left to right are waterbuck, impala, impala, blue wildebeest, southern greater kudu, cape eland, cape eland, southern greater kudu, blue wildebeest, waterbuck and impala.

I am on the left and all the horns up to the first set of cape eland horns (right in front of me) were taken by me. The second set of eland horns and everything else to the right were taken by dad. At the time my eland was #13 in the world but I never had it officially scored or entered. Not showing is a couple sets of warthog tusks and some small stuff like duiker and steenbok.

Here is the my eland in the field

I lost dad, my hunting partner, on Sept 29 2013 to lung cancer. Sure do miss hunting with him.

Very cool. I haven't seen any of those animals but I can bet it was a blast to hunt them especially with your Dad.

Photos preserve some great memories, even after they get a bit dim in our memory banks.

Thanks for sharing the photos, great memories.

My best times hunting were with my father, grandpa, uncles, and other family members

Neat photos.....How is that African game in the frying pan?

May his memory be eternal.

This post reminds me to treasure the time I spend hunting with my dad, while I have it. Lord-willing, someday I'll be in your shoes.

Kudu, eland and impala are great. Wildebeest and warthog are pretty good. Waterbuck are kind of an acquired taste. Duiker, which are not in the photo are good but they only weigh about 25 lbs so they normally cook them whole over a spit. One meat that is surprisingly good is zebra, has kind of a natural sweetness to it.
